OXFORD, Miss. – Films are being introduced more and more to
\naugment printed material in studies across the academic
\nspectrum, and as with all library materials, identifying
\nand making accessible the most desirable film titles is
\noften challenging.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nThis task at the University of Mississippi’s John D.
\nWilliams Library falls in part to Michelle Emanuel, catalog
\nlibrarian and assistant professor, who continuously
\nexplores avenues to help ensure that faculty and students
\nare well-served. In her efforts, Emanuel applied for and
\nhas been chosen to receive a $3,000 grant to survey major
\nfilm libraries in the Paris region to analyze and evaluate
\nthe collections and services provided to visiting
\nscholars.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nAs recipient of the 2008 Association of College and
\nResearch Libraries Western European Studies Section Coutts
\nNijhoff International West European Specialist Study Grant,
\nEmanuel is scheduled to study in Paris for two weeks in
\nSeptember.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“The growing importance of film studies in many academic
\nfields, as well as the challenges of identifying and
\naccessing a full range of relevant primary and secondary
\nresearch materials, suggest that Dr. Emanuel’s timely
\nsurvey of Parisian resource centers will provide valuable
\nguidance for librarians and for the students and faculty
\nthey serve,” said Bryan Skib, collection development
\nofficer at the University of Michigan Libraries and award
\nchair of the grant selection committee.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“This is a wonderful research opportunity for Michelle; the
\nresults of her research will be beneficial not only to our
\nlibrary but also to other academic libraries with serious
\ninterest in film collection development,” said Julia
\nRholes, UM dean of libraries.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nShe is slated to be awarded the check and a plaque June 30
\nat the WESS general membership meeting during the 2008
\nAmerican Library Association Annual Conference in Anaheim,
\nCalif.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe award will enable Emanuel to combine several of her
\ninterests into one topic while venturing into a new field
\nof research.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“I’ve always been interested in film and film studies, and
\nin my work here, I wear a number of hats, including that of
\nmedia cataloger,” Emanuel said. “So, I work with films all
\nday, and as subject selector for the Department of Modern
\nLanguages, I frequently recommend the purchase of foreign
\nfilms for the library’s collection.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nWhile in Anaheim, Emanuel said she plans “to spend a few
\ndays before the conference using the film library at UCLA,
\nat the suggestion of the WESS committee, so as to anchor my
\nstudy in Paris with a comparison of what film resources are
\navailable at American libraries.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe grant covers airfare, transportation in Europe and
\nlodging and board for up to 14 days. The primary criterion
\nfor the award is the significance and utility of the
\nproposed project as a contribution to the study of the
\nacquisition, organization or use of library materials from
\nor relating to Western Europe.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“I’m very excited that I will be able to return to Paris
\nfor the first time since 2004, when I was doing research on
\nmy book on Leo Malet, which was a revision of my
\ndissertation.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nEmanuel earned her Ph.D. in French and her master’s in
\nlibrary science from the University of Alabama. She has
\nbeen a co-director of the Oxford Film Festival since 2005
\nand a volunteer since the festival began five years ago.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nACRL is a division of the American Library Association
\nrepresenting 13,000 academic and research librarians and
\ninterested individuals. It is the only individual
\nmembership organization in North America that develops
\nprograms, products and services to meet the unique needs of
\nacademic and research librarians.
