\nOXFORD, Miss. – A University of Mississippi committee is
\nwrapping up a campuswide study of its athletics programs as
\npart of the NCAA Division I athletics certification
\nprogram.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nA draft of the 375-page self-study report is on reserve in
\nthe J.D. Williams Library on the Oxford campus through
\nMarch 31 to encourage public review and comment.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe final report is to be submitted to the NCAA about May
\n1. After reviewing UM’s final self-study report, an NCAA
\npeer review team plans to visit the campus Oct. 21-23.
\nSeveral months later, UM should be notified of the NCAA’s
\ncertification status.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nNCAA’s Division I certification program is the first to
\nfocus solely on athletics as an integral part of a
\nuniversity. It was adopted by NCAA Division I members in
\n1993, when they overwhelmingly supported the program and
\nits standards.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe program helps ensure integrity in members’ athletics
\noperations by throwing them open to the rest of the
\nuniversity community and to the public. Institutions
\ninvolved in the program benefit by increasing campuswide
\nawareness and knowledge of their athletics programs,
\nconfirming their strengths and developing plans to improve
\nareas of concern.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAreas studied are academic integrity, governance and
\ncommitment to rules compliance, and equity and student
\nathlete well-being. Within each area, the program has set
\nstandards, or operating principles, which serve as a
\n“measuring stick” upon which all Division I members are
\nevaluated.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTo conduct the self-study, committees of faculty, staff,
\nstudents, alumni and athletics personnel have since
\nSeptember gathered data and information from existing
\nrecords, interviews and other sources. The steering
\ncommittee responsible for the study includes Chancellor
\nRobert Khayat and is chaired by Acting Provost Morris
\nStocks.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nNCAA’s certification program “engages representatives from
\na wide spectrum of the campus in a full review of the
\nathletics department,” Stocks said. “Many misperceptions
\nand myths are laid to rest in the process.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nFollowing its visit, the peer review team reports to the
\nNCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification, which
\ndetermines UM’s certification status and announces it
\npublicly. The three options of certification status are
\ncertified, certified with conditions and not certified.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nInstitutions have an opportunity to correct deficiencies.
\nThose that don’t may be ruled ineligible for NCAA
\nchampionships. Tough sanctions also can be imposed on
\ninstitutions failing to conduct a comprehensive
\nself-study.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe NCAA is a membership organization of colleges and
\nuniversities participating in intercollegiate athletics.
\nThe association’s mission is to maintain intercollegiate
\nathletics as an integral part of educational programs, and
\nathletes as an integral part of the student body. The NCAA
\nalso formulates rules of play for NCAA sports, conducts
\nnational championships, adopts and enforces standards of
\neligibility, and studies all phases of intercollegiate
\nathletics.
