OXFORD, Miss. — Building bookcases and painting walls
\nmight not sound like a fun group activity for many college
\nstudents, but for more than a hundred University of
\nMississippi honors students, these chores provided an
\nopportunity to bond while helping a good cause.<\/span>
\n
<\/p>\n

\nThe group, roughly half the sophomores in the university’s
\nSally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College, traveled to
\nChicago to fulfill the community action component of their
\nhonors experience. They traveled by train, which meant 10
\nhours on two train cars for the 102 participants.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We worked with the volunteer organization Chicago Cares,
\nand they had 3,500 volunteers at different places in the
\ncity, so we were just a small part of that,” said Matt
\nStephenson, a mathematics major from Madison who
\nco-organized the trip. “Our group put together bookshelves
\nand painted a mural at a community center.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nFor the trips, the students do all the planning, including
\nselecting a city for their travels, arranging where they
\nvolunteer and handling the logistics of travel and
\naccommodation. Previous volunteer trips have included
\nSeattle, Boston and Chicago.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDouglass Sullivan-Gonzalez, dean of the honors college,
\nsaid he is proud of this year’s sophomore class. “These
\nguys have set the bar high for our other classes to
\nfollow,” he said. “It is the single largest group of
\nstudents to have traveled for the SMBHC.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nChicago Cares is the city’s premier volunteer organization,
\nwhich provides opportunities for individuals and businesses
\nto improve the Chicago community through participation in
\ncreative, structured group volunteer programs designed to
\naddress the city’s most pressing needs.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Ole Miss group was the only one from outside of
\nChicago, and the students said they received an
\nenthusiastic response.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nErin Callahan, co-organizer for the trip, helped build
\nbookshelves at a day care for underprivileged children. “It
\nwas a tricky job to put the bookshelves together,” said
\nCallahan, an international studies major from Ocean
\nSprings. “I was thankful that it was all organized and we
\nhad written instructions. We worked hard, but it was fun.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBeyond helping the children, the students said they
\ndeveloped a sense of camaraderie by spending the weekend
\ntogether. “I got to meet so many classmates, and it was a
\nreally good experience to have the entire class together,”
\nCallahan said. “I hope the fact that we brought so many
\npeople inspires future classes because a big group is so
\nmuch better. Everyone had an amazing time, and it was
\nreally meaningful.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAfter completing their volunteer work, the group reveled in
\nChicago on their own. “I did a lot of walking around and
\ngot to go to Wrigley Field,” Stephenson said. “I’m a big
\nbaseball fan, so that was great.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nCallahan enjoyed deep dish pizza and went ice skating. “It
\nwas my first trip to Chicago and it was amazing. We went to
\nthe Art Institute and Wicker Park and Chinatown and did
\nsome shopping.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
