\nOXFORD, Miss. – A colorful collection of prints portraying
\nhousehold and botanical imagery is on display at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi Museum through April 6.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\n“Home Makeover” is a carefully chosen series of 14
\nserigraph, relief and digital prints made by Virginia
\nRougon Chavis, UM assistant professor of art. A gallery
\nreception for the artist is scheduled 1:30-3 p.m. March 30.
\nThe museum is located at 5th Street and University Avenue.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nA native of Baton Rouge, Chavis was reared by parents who
\ntaught her to appreciate gardening, paying special
\nattention to native plants, identifying them by their
\nbotanical rather than common plant names.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The garden is where these prints actually began,” Chavis
\nsaid. “I grew several plants from seeds and observed their
\ngrowth and development in the earth at different stages. In
\nthe prolonged, quiet process, I was able to record what I
\nsaw through drawing on paper and photography.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAs Chavis moved to computer graphics and digital prints,
\nshe was able to include some of the scientific data to
\nobtain more visual interest. This technique is depicted in
\nher prints “Lavenda angustifolva #1,” “Zinnia elegans,”
\n“Hilianthus annuus” and “Monarda fistulosa.” The botanical
\nsubject matter is also reflected in “In Bloom,”
\n“Pollenation,” “Waiting for Spring” and “A is for . . .”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nChavis said her parents also taught her to strive to
\nachieve her goals and to become successful in anything she
\nattempts. This included earning her master of fine arts
\ndegree from Savannah College of Art and Design, where she
\ngained experience in teaching typography and production
\ndesign. She joined the UM art faculty in 2002.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“For most of my existence, I refused to believe I would
\never want to marry and certainly never have a family as I
\nthought those things would hold me back in accomplishing my
\ngoals as a professional,” Chavis said. “Eventually, I
\nchanged my mind on both of those ideas and began to look at
\nlife differently. I used to feel as though home was a place
\nthat held me back. Now I can’t wait to get there and see
\nthe new changes that have taken place each day.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe themes of home and family are reflected in Chavis’
\nprints “Passion Quilt,” “Snip, Snip, Snip,” “Nurture Me,”
\n“Home Sweet Home” and “We Are Family.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nChavis compares recent changes in her life to the changes
\nin the seasons and printmaking.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Printing, for me, is the most enjoyable process because of
\nits unpredictability,” she said. “And just as I had planted
\nseeds in my garden and covered them with a quilt of soil to
\ngrow in the sun, I wake up each morning with excitement of
\nwhat the new day will bring.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nChavis’ work has won critical approval from those who have
\nviewed the exhibition.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The newer work has taken a more vibrant color direction,”
\nsaid Albert Sperath, director of University Museum. “Her
\nbotanical subject matter now is similar to the earlier
\nwork, but the colors for me are more exciting.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMuseum hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through
\nSaturday and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. For more information or
