OXFORD, Miss. – Like most little girls, Cecilia Caldwell
\nadored her daddy. From the time she was a 2-year-old
\nsitting beside him as he drove, to fishing with him and her
\nbrothers on Wissahickon Creek, Cecilia could usually be
\nfound by his side. He was her hero.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\n“He is still my hero,” she said. “He always will be. Over
\nall these years, my love and admiration for him, and my
\nappreciation of him, have steadily grown. I am so thankful
\nthat he was my father.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nNow, because of a scholarship in his name, Caldwell’s
\nlegacy will live on. Cecilia, along with her mother,
\nBettye, and other family members and friends, have created
\nthe Henry Cecil Caldwell Pharmacy Scholarship Endowment to
\nhonor a man they love and dearly miss.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Dad always encouraged people to do their best – that’s
\nwhat he was all about, encouraging people and building them
\nup,” Cecilia said. “That’s why we thought this scholarship
\nto assist pharmacy students from Mississippi with financial
\nneed is a fitting way to honor him. Dad achieved great
\nacademic and professional success in his field, and we hope
\nto make that level of success possible for future
\ngenerations of deserving students.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nRecipients of the Caldwell Scholarship are to be full-time
\npharmacy students who are Mississippi residents.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nCaldwell, a Walnut Grove native, earned a bachelor’s degree
\nfrom the UM School of Pharmacy in 1952 and a master’s
\ndegree in pharmaceutical organic chemistry from UM in 1954.
\nHe later earned his Ph.D. in pharmaceutical organic
\nchemistry from the University of Kansas. In 1954, he
\nmarried Bettye Sue Caldwell, a native of Lena and an alumna
\nof Mississippi College.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nHis family remembers him as a hard worker and devoted
\nfamily man. From his humble beginnings on a chicken farm in
\nrural Mississippi, he became the first in his family to
\ngraduate from college. He instilled in his children a love
\nand appreciation for the outdoors, and they recall happy
\ndays walking in the woods, canoeing, tubing, fishing and
\nrock collecting.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“His Mississippi roots were a big part of him,” Cecilia
\nsaid. “He loved this place.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nCaldwell had a long and successful career, working for much
\nof it at SmithKline & French labs (now GlaxoSmithKline) in
\nPhiladelphia, Pa., and later at AAI in Wilmington, N.C. He
\npublished many significant technical papers and held 23
\nU.S. patents.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“All who knew him felt he was the kindest, most supportive
\nperson they could ever meet,” said Marty Beasley, a
\ncolleague and family friend. “He was humble even though his
\ncareer was very fruitful and he held many important patents
\nin his name.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nAll three of Caldwell’s children have connections to
\npharmacy. After attending pharmacy school, Cecilia worked
\nin the pharmaceutical industry before going to medical
\nschool. She practices as an obstetrics and gynecologist at
\nthe Maine Medical Center in Portland. Brent is a chemist in
\nGermany for Boehringer Ingleheim, a pharmaceutical company
\nbased in Connecticut. Mark is an architectural engineer who
\ndoes a great deal of consulting with pharmaceutical
\ncompanies.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“My dad was an enthusiastic supporter of education,”
\nCecilia said. “He believed strongly that all deserving
\nstudents, even in the face of economic obstacles, should
\nhave access to higher education.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nTo give to the Henry Cecil Caldwell Pharmacy Scholarship
