JACKSON, Miss. – The University of Mississippi Medical
\nCenter is listed among the 100 top hospitals in the country
\nas designated by Thomson Healthcare, a national health care
\ninformation company.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nThe “100 Top Hospitals National Benchmarks for Success”
\nstudy identifies the nation’s top performing hospitals
\nusing the two most recent years of data. Top performers are
\nselected from more than 3,000 hospitals across the country
\nand divided into five categories for evaluation. The
\nMedical Center is included in the major teaching hospitals
\ncategory – the only Mississippi hospital to make the Top
\n100 for 2007.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“It’s not an honor you apply for; that’s what makes it
\nspecial,” said Dr. Will Ferniany, CEO of University
\nHospitals and Health System. “Being a Top 100 Hospital is a
\nreflection of the great physicians and staff at University
\nof Mississippi Health Care, who provide high-quality care
\nto our patients. It also reflects that we are an
\nefficiently run, high-quality hospital system.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe recognition is wonderful for the health system, said
\nDr. Dan Jones, vice chancellor for health affairs.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“I am grateful to Will Ferniany, other University of
\nMississippi Health Care leaders, our entire staff, and
\nphysician faculty for the hard work that has gone into this
\nrecognition,” he said. “I am proud and grateful that now
\nMississippians can receive care at one of America’s Top 100
\nHospitals.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nGov. Haley Barbour said the announcement “further
\ndemonstrates that our commitment to provide UMMC with
\nappropriate resources and funding over the past four years
\nhas helped Mississippi’s premier research and teaching
\nmedical center gain recognition as one of the nation’s
\nfinest health care facilities. I congratulate UMMC’s
\noutstanding leadership and staff on this tremendous
\nachievement.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nFerniany and the UMHC are featured in the latest edition of
\nModern Healthcare magazine for being among the 28 newcomers
\nto the list.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThomson 100 Top Hospitals national award honors
\norganizations that rank at or above the top 90 percent on
\nhospital-wide performance when compared with its national
\npeers. The hospital is scored on eight performance
\nmeasures, including good patient outcomes, improved patient
\nsafety, efficient hospital operations and effective
\ncommunity service. Thomson uses public Medicare data, so
\nthat all hospitals can be measured equally.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Employers, health plans, and hospitals need to take note
\nthat we have entered a new phase in driving transformation
\nof the health care industry,” said Jean Chenoweth, senior
\nvice president in the Center for Healthcare Improvement at
\nThomson Healthcare. “Hospitals setting new levels of
\npatient safety are those with the highest balanced scores
\nacross quality, efficiency and financial performance.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe recognition is the product of a focused effort to cut
\ncosts, improve quality and increase revenue, while
\ndemonstrating to employees that they work in some of the
\nbest hospitals in the country, Ferniany said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“We set being named a Top 100 Hospital as one of our goals
\n20 months ago, and I am proud of our physicians and staff
\nthat made this a reality,” he said.
