\nTed Ownby\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
OXFORD, Miss. – Ted Ownby, interim director of the Center
\nfor the Study of Southern Culture at the University of
\nMississippi, has been chosen to participate in the
\nOrganization of American Historians Distinguished
\nLectureship Program.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\n“This is an especially appealing honor because I get to do
\nsomething that I like – talk about Southern history – in a
\nway that benefits a group I really admire: the Organization
\nof American Historians,” said Ownby, UM professor of
\nhistory and Southern studies.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nOwnby, who has been a UM faculty member for 20 years, is
\nthe author of numerous article publications and is
\nco-editing The Mississippi Encyclopedia, which is to be
\npublished in 2009. He has provided OAH with a list of
\npossible lecture topics, including “Is There Still an
\nAmerican South? A Historian Critiques the Question” and
\n“Shopping in Mississippi History.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe organization’s mission statement says the OAH is to
\n“promote excellence in the scholarship, teaching, and
\npresentation of American history, and encourage wide
\ndiscussion of historical questions and equitable treatment
\nof all practitioners of history.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nOAH is the largest professional society devoted to the
\nstudy of American history. Presidents of the OAH
\nDistinguished Lectureship Program have been appointing
\ncolleagues to the program for more than 25 years to lecture
\nat institutions.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“The OAH has been a leader in trying out innovative
\napproaches to scholarship and teaching, so I am happy to
\nget to be part of its group of lectures,” Ownby said.
