The HR team begins their first session with a warm-up plank<\/p><\/div>\n

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of participating with my colleagues in Leadercast\u2019s Healthy\u00a0<\/span>Team Challenge. Healthy team? The program challenged us with weekly discussions concerning\u00a0<\/span>our team dynamics, leadership topics, as well as a physical challenge for good measure. Hello,\u00a0<\/span>have you met me? This is right up my DNA!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span>
\nWeek One<\/strong>:<\/span>\u00a0No small feat, our assignment was to answer the \u201cwhy?\u201d \u201cWhy do we show up each\u00a0<\/span>day? What is our \u201cwhy?\u201d \u201cConsider how you (have an impact on) the lives of others and how\u00a0<\/span>you are in service to others.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
My team comprised Audrey Floyd, Judy\u00a0<\/span>Hopper, Jessica Hughes and Pam\u00a0<\/span>Johnson. Each team member noodled\u00a0<\/span>the idea and contributed a line or two.\u00a0<\/span>With 100 percent participation, the\u00a0<\/span>end product of the discussion resulted\u00a0<\/span>in the following informal \u201cmission\u00a0<\/span>statement.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cWe show up each day, regardless of\u00a0<\/span>distractions, and reach a little deeper\u00a0<\/span>to do the things that matter in order to\u00a0<\/span>inspire and encourage others to\u00a0<\/span>personal and professional fulfillment!\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n

\nWhat is\u00a0<\/span>your<\/span><\/em>\u00a0\u201cwhy?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n

\nWe also learned that a spontaneous plank session warmed us up and really got the blood\u00a0<\/span>flowing! Why don\u2019t we start more meetings off with a few planks?<\/span><\/div>\n

\nWeek Two<\/span><\/strong>: Leadercast speaker Andy Stanley invited us to discover our critical role with our\u00a0<\/span>organization. The critical role was defined as \u201cIf you don\u2019t do it, nothing gets done, and if you\u00a0<\/span>do it well enough, it almost doesn\u2019t matter what else doesn\u2019t get done.\u201d The assignment was to\u00a0<\/span>write a one-sentence job description for yourself that highlights your unique contribution. After\u00a0<\/span>some thought, here\u2019s my one-sentence job description:\u00a0<\/span>To create paths for hiring teams to\u00a0<\/span>succeed in selecting the best applicants and for employees to continue to grow professionally\u00a0<\/span>and personally on a campus that promotes a healthy and engaging environment.<\/span><\/em>\u00a0This is some\u00a0<\/span>good stuff, right? Can you jot down your one-sentence job description with your core\u00a0<\/span>responsibility, the critical role, on an index card? Where do you fit in? Our physical fitness\u00a0<\/span>challenge was shoulder shrugs! They are like an instant massage break. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Thumbs up for wall sits, the HR team\u2019s week 3 fitness challenge<\/p><\/div>\n

Week Three<\/span><\/strong>: Wall sits! While\u00a0<\/span>sitting on the floor after wall sits\u00a0<\/span>and more planks, we tackled the\u00a0<\/span>discussion of improving team\u00a0<\/span>communication and\u00a0<\/span>collaboration. The obvious\u00a0<\/span>obstacle for the HR team-at-large\u00a0<\/span>is our two separate offices,\u00a0<\/span>Howry Hall and Lester Hall.\u00a0<\/span>When divided more than three\u00a0<\/span>years ago, the team created\u00a0<\/span>systems to keep operations\u00a0<\/span>moving, but what more could we\u00a0<\/span>do to further team communication and collaboration? \u00a0We brainstormed activities to bring the\u00a0<\/span>two teams together, while getting to know each other better. Hint: We have an eye on Campus\u00a0<\/span>Recreation\u2019s Rebel Challenge Course and more team-learning opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\nWeek Four<\/span><\/strong>: This program has been interrupted. Ugh, in all honesty, my schedule didn\u2019t allow\u00a0<\/span>me to participate in week four activities, wall pushups and the topic \u201cCelebrate the Victories.\u201d It\u00a0<\/span>is no secret that we like to celebrate birthdays, as reminded by Jessica, but what else can we do\u00a0<\/span>to celebrate our successes?<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span>
\nWeek Five<\/span><\/strong>: Wait, what? No week five?! The team was saddened to realize that the challenge\u00a0<\/span>ended with week four. We were there without an assignment or a physical challenge. So, what\u00a0<\/span>did we do? We committed to keep it up. It may sound funny, but really it was the only time\u00a0<\/span>most of us see each other. Can you relate? We all get busy, and we all have less and less face-<\/span>to-face contact. We send each other IMs, emails and text messages. We hop on the hamster\u00a0<\/span>wheel of work without asking, \u201cWhat are we doing?\u201d \u201cWhy are we doing it?\u201d and \u201cWhere do I\u00a0<\/span>fit in?\u201d Even more, how can we function better as a team through communication and\u00a0<\/span>collaboration while remembering to celebrate our successes? Are you ready for these\u00a0<\/span>questions? Make the commitment, make the time, make the connections.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
