\nOXFORD, Miss. – Four University of Mississippi journalism
\nfaculty members are program participants for the six-state
\nSociety of Professional Journalists Regional Conference
\nMarch 28-29 in New Orleans.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nKathleen Wickham, associate professor of journalism, is
\nprogram chair for the annual event, and Wickham’s faculty
\ncolleagues Jeanni Atkins, Samir Husni and Curtis Wilkie are
\nslated as program participants.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe conference, being held jointly between SPJ Regions 8
\nand 12, is expected to attract journalists from six
\nSouthern states, said Wickham, UM’s SPJ chapter adviser.
\nThe two regions comprise the states of Texas, Oklahoma,
\nMississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and Tennessee.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHusni, journalism chair and Herderman Lecturer of
\nJournalism, is Saturday’s keynote speaker for the
\nconference. He plans to deliver the address “The Future of
\nNewspapers (It’s the Content, Silly)” at the noon
\nluncheon.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWilkie, associate professor, Cook Chair and Overby Center
\nfor Southern Journalism and Politics Fellow, is to be a
\npanelist for the discussion “Rascals, Renegades and
\nRapscallions: Veteran Journalists on Getting Beneath a
\nSubject’s Public Persona.” Atkins, associate professor, is
\nthe moderator. Other panelists are Julia Reed, contributing
\neditor for Vogue and Newsweek, and James Gill, columnist
\nwith the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSPJ is the nation’s largest professional journalism
\norganization with nearly 10,000 members dedicated to
\nencouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating
\nhigh standards of ethical behavior. The regional spring
\nconferences also serve to highlight the work of collegiate
\njournalists with the presentation of awards in print,
\nmagazine, broadcast and online categories.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nConference events are scheduled at the Maison Saint Charles
\nHotel and Loyola University. Registration is $60 for
\nstudents and $95 for professionals. For more information on

\nSchool of Journalism and Mass Communication, Texas State
\nUniversity. Moderator is Kym Fox, senior lecturer and print
\nsequence head, School of Journalism and Mass Communication,
\nTexas State University.

\n-“The Journalism of Disaster, Part 2: The media’s response
\nin Katrina’s wake” features David Meeks, city editor, The
\nTimes-Picayune; Jonathan Shelley, news director, WDSU-TV,
\nNew Orleans; Marlin Defillo, assistant superintendent
\nBureau of Investigations, New Orleans Police Department;
\nand Sally Forman, former communications director, City of
\nNew Orleans. Moderator is Crystal Bolner, Loyola University
\nSPJ chapter adviser.

\n-“The Journalism of Race and Class: Did the media get the
\nJena story right?” features Wendi C. Thomas, metro
\ncolumnist, The Commercial Appeal, Memphis; Craig Franklin,

\nNicole Hutcheson, reporter, St. Petersburg Times, St.

\nrefuse them” featuring George Kennedy, professor emeritus,
\nSchool of Journalism, University of Missouri-Columbia,
\nNicole Dahmen, assistant professor, Manship School of Mass
\nCommunication, Louisiana State University; and John Zibluk,
\nassociate professor, Arkansas State University. Moderator

\nOklahoma City; and Dwayne Fatherree, managing editor of
\nNOLA.com. Moderator is C.M. “Sonny” Rhodes, assistant
