Baker and Thelma Kelley Baker Chair in Law<br \/>\nand professor of philosophy, is the author of two books and<br \/>\nthe editor of six others. His lecture, &#8220;In Praise of<br \/>\nRealism (And Against &#8216;Nonsense&#8217; Jurisprudence),&#8221; is part of<br \/>\nthe UM School of Law&#8217;s ongoing Dunbar Lecture series. It is<br \/>\nset for 4 p.m. in the William N. Ethridge Jr. Moot<br \/>\nCourtroom.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Who better to give this lecture than Professor Leiter?&#8221;<br \/>\nsaid UM law school Dean Samuel M. Davis. &#8220;He holds a joint<br \/>\nappointment both in law and philosophy at Texas, and he is<br \/>\nuniquely equipped to talk about the relationship between<br \/>\nthe two disciplines. We look forward to his lecture on our<br \/>\ncampus and his sharing with us his perspectives on the<br \/>\nRealist school of thought, including the ideas of the very<br \/>\nfirst Dunbar lecturer, Professor Ronald Dworkin.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Dworkin has recently taken critical aim at an approach to<br \/>\nhow courts should decide cases that he associates most<br \/>\nprominently with Judge Richard Posner. Dworkin dubs the<br \/>\napproach &#8220;a Chicago School of anti-theoretical,<br \/>\nnon-nonsense jurisprudence,&#8221; Leiter said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Leiter plans to argue that the dispute between Dworkin and<br \/>\nPosner &#8220;is not one illuminated by the contrast between<br \/>\ntheory and practice.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;It is rather a dispute about the kind of law that is<br \/>\nrelevant and illuminating when it comes to law and<br \/>\nadjudication,&#8221; he said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Leiter has taught at the University of Texas at Austin<br \/>\nsince 1995 and has been a visiting professor at Yale Law<br \/>\nSchool, University College London and the University of<br \/>\nChicago Law School.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The Dunbar Lecture series was established in 1987 by Jack<br \/>\nDunbar and Wylene Dunbar to stimulate creative and<br \/>\nanalytical thinking concerning the law&#8217;s role in society.<br \/>\nThe lecture series is a cooperative effort between the<br \/>\nDepartment of Philosophy and the School of Law.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>For assistance related to a disability, contact Connie Lamb<br \/>\nat 662-915-6900 or clamb@olemiss.edu.
