\nOXFORD, Miss. – University of Texas at Austin law professor
\nBrian Leiter plans to examine the Realist theory of
\nadjudication in a Thursday (March 27) lecture set to take
\nplace in the Lamar Law Center on campus.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nLeiter, Hines H. Baker and Thelma Kelley Baker Chair in Law
\nand professor of philosophy, is the author of two books and
\nthe editor of six others. His lecture, “In Praise of
\nRealism (And Against ‘Nonsense’ Jurisprudence),” is part of
\nthe UM School of Law’s ongoing Dunbar Lecture series. It is
\nset for 4 p.m. in the William N. Ethridge Jr. Moot
\nCourtroom.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Who better to give this lecture than Professor Leiter?”
\nsaid UM law school Dean Samuel M. Davis. “He holds a joint
\nappointment both in law and philosophy at Texas, and he is
\nuniquely equipped to talk about the relationship between
\nthe two disciplines. We look forward to his lecture on our
\ncampus and his sharing with us his perspectives on the
\nRealist school of thought, including the ideas of the very
\nfirst Dunbar lecturer, Professor Ronald Dworkin.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDworkin has recently taken critical aim at an approach to
\nhow courts should decide cases that he associates most
\nprominently with Judge Richard Posner. Dworkin dubs the
\napproach “a Chicago School of anti-theoretical,
\nnon-nonsense jurisprudence,” Leiter said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nLeiter plans to argue that the dispute between Dworkin and
\nPosner “is not one illuminated by the contrast between
\ntheory and practice.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“It is rather a dispute about the kind of law that is
\nrelevant and illuminating when it comes to law and
\nadjudication,” he said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nLeiter has taught at the University of Texas at Austin
\nsince 1995 and has been a visiting professor at Yale Law
\nSchool, University College London and the University of
\nChicago Law School.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Dunbar Lecture series was established in 1987 by Jack
\nDunbar and Wylene Dunbar to stimulate creative and
\nanalytical thinking concerning the law’s role in society.
\nThe lecture series is a cooperative effort between the
\nDepartment of Philosophy and the School of Law.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
