\n\"gillespi.jpg\"OXFORD, Miss. – Students at the University of Mississippi
\nhave an opportunity to be on the cusp of the next big
\nbusiness idea with the Gillespie Business Plan Competition,
\nsponsored by the School of Business Administration.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe contest, in its fourth year, is open to any UM student,
\nregardless of major, and carries prize money. The
\ncompetition includes two divisions, with prizes of $5,000
\nat stake for the best business plan and the best business
\nconcept.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDeadline for the competition is 5 p.m. Friday (March 28),
\nwhen a two-page executive summary must be e-mailed to
\njholleman@bus.olemiss.edu. Twenty semifinalists are to be
\nannounced April 2. On April 10, the semifinalists give
\nfive-minute pitches to judges, and six finalists are to be
\nselected. On April 24, finalists present their in-depth
\nplans to judges and winners are chosen.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The Gillespie Business Plan Competition is a natural
\noutcome of the instructional work taking place in the Ole
\nMiss School of Business,” said John Holleman, director of
\ncorporate relations and MBA services. “Because our
\nundergraduate and graduate programs emphasize
\nentrepreneurial thinking about the key role of the
\nentrepreneur in our economy, the competition is an
\nimportant element of our overall curriculum.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSince business school students are expected to know how to
\nwrite a business plan upon graduation, the contest is an
\nexcellent way for them to hone their skills.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Participating in the Gillespie Business Plan Competitions
\nprovides students with invaluable experience in building
\ntheir skill-set in the tools needed to start a new business
\nenterprise,” Holleman said. “The faculty in the School of
\nBusiness Administration recognize that they have an
\nimportant role in graduating students who possess
\nentrepreneurial skills. The Gillespie Business Plan
\nCompetitions provides our students with an opportunity to
\nhave substantial real-world experience in developing a
\nviable business venture.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAlthough students can submit only one business plan, they
\nare allowed to compete as a team of up to 12 members. It is
\nalso possible for one person to win both categories.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The Gillespie business plan competition allows students
\nhands-on experience to apply knowledge,” said Ken Cyree,
\ninterim business school dean. “It is a very valuable part
\nof education and positions our students in a solid
\ncompetitive position, and it also allows budding
\nentrepreneurs to gain insight into what will make them
\nsuccessful in the future.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe endowment for the competition was provided in honor of
\nEdwin C. Gillespie, a 1943 business administration
\ngraduate. His widow, Jean Gillespie, and brother, Joe
\nGillespie, a 1950 liberal arts graduate, helped establish
\nthe endowment to assist students in promoting concepts in
\nentrepreneurship.
