\n\"alarm.jpg\"OXFORD, Miss. – Six new digital warning sirens with voice
\ncapabilities are slated for testing at the University of
\nMississippi Thursday (March 27) in preparation for a
\npossible tornado, earthquake, natural disaster or man-made
\nthreat.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe testing is scheduled to begin around 9 a.m. and could
\nlast several hours; students, faculty, staff and Oxford
\narea residents can expect to hear both voice testing and
\nsiren sounds throughout the day, said Denny Buchannon,
\nproject engineer in UM’s Physical Plant Department.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Each siren will be tested by itself until all six are
\nworking properly,” Buchannon said. “The tests will be as
\nshort as possible. These tests are going to be slightly
\ndisruptive at best.” With one mechanical siren and four
\ndigital sirens previously posted, the new addition brings
\nthe total number of sirens to 11. Once all sirens are
\noperational, voice announcements are to be added to the
\nweekly Wednesday siren tests, Buchannon said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe voice tests and horn blasts should not last more than
\n30 seconds to a minute at each of the six new siren
\nlocations, said James Windham, director of procurement
\nservices and emergency management coordinator.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“In the event of an actual tornado on Thursday, people
\nwould be able to recognize the differences between our
\ntests and the warnings,” Windham said. “If such a disaster
\nwere imminent, the public should be aware of and follow
\nsafety precautions such as taking cover, tuning into local
\nnews broadcasts for more details, staying away from
\nwindows and listening for further voice instructions.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nCity and county officials have been alerted that the
\ntesting is scheduled. In the event of an approaching
\ntornado or other imminent emergency, UM sirens are
\ntriggered electronically by the county; they are also
\nconnected to the city’s mechanical warning sirens, but can
\nbe triggered separately, said Jimmy Allgood, Lafayette
\nCounty emergency management coordinator.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Our office has a direct line to the National Weather
\nService in Memphis,” Allgood said. “In the event of an
\nactual tornado, there’s a three-minute sustained blast, a
\nbrief intermission, another two-minute blast and another
\nbrief intermission. This cycle would continue until the
\narea is no longer considered to be under a tornado threat.
\nFive minutes after the last blast has ended, the public
\nshould cautiously proceed to come from under cover and
\nawait possible further warnings.”
