OXFORD, Miss. – National Book Award winner Ellen Gilchrist
\nagreed to come home to Mississippi for the 15th Oxford
\nConference for the Book because the timing was good.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nGilchrist, who lives part time on the Mississippi Gulf
\nCoast, is scheduled to make her first book conference
\nappearance April 5 in a panel discussion led by artist Bill
\nDunlap. The 2 p.m. session is to be held at the University
\nof Mississippi’s Nutt Auditorium. Hosted by UM April 2-5,
\nthe conference is dedicated to writer, folklorist and
\nanthropologist Zora Neale Hurston.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nWhen Gilchrist is not spending time with family at her home
\nin Ocean Springs, she lives in Fayetteville, Ark., where
\nseveral years ago she honed her fiction under the
\ninstruction of Bill Harrison and others in the MFA program
\nat the University of Arkansas. Although she didn’t complete
\nthe coursework for the MFA, she learned enough to publish a
\nwell-received collection of short stories, “In the Land of
\nDreamy Dreams,” (Little, Brown and Co., 1980), soon after
\nleaving the program. Her second book, the story collection
\n“Victory over Japan,” (Back Bay Books, 1984) won the
\nNational Book Award for Fiction in 1984.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nGilchrist’s other published works include two poetry
\ncollections, a book of essays, six novels and 13 short
\nstory collections, including “Collected Stories,” which
\nappeared in 2000. Also published that year was “Falling
\nthrough Space” (Faber and Faber), the personal narratives
\nthat first aired as a series of commentaries on National
\nPublic Radio’s Morning Edition.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nA Vicksburg native, Gilchrist joined the faculty of the MFA
\nprogram at Arkansas in 2000, in part, she says, so that she
\nmight feel closer to her grandchildren. “I started teaching
\nthe year my oldest grandchild went to Duke,” she said.
\n“Teaching has allowed me to enter the world of my
\ngrandchildren. It’s wonderful to be and talk with people
\nthat age.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nBesides teaching, Gilchrist still writes. In May, Algonquin
\nBooks of Chapel Hill is scheduled to release “A Dangerous
\nAge.” Gilchrist’s seventh novel and her first work of
\nlonger fiction in more than a decade, the book tells the
\nstory of three female cousins from a tradition-rich
\nSouthern family as they attempt to cope with an ongoing
\nwar. If previous critical reception is any indication – the
\nWashington Post has said that Gilchrist should be
\nconsidered a “national cultural treasure” – this novel
\nstands to join the ranks of first-class contemporary
\nfiction with Gilchrist’s many other books.
