{"id":58331,"date":"2016-04-22T09:16:26","date_gmt":"2016-04-22T14:16:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.olemiss.edu\/?p=58331"},"modified":"2016-04-22T09:16:26","modified_gmt":"2016-04-22T14:16:26","slug":"law-school-student-publishing-sets-new-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/law-school-student-publishing-sets-new-record\/","title":{"rendered":"Law School Student Publishing Sets New Record"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_58376\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58376\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-58376\" src=\"http:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/MS-Law-Journal-Books-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"A record 28 Mississippi Law Journal student members published this spring.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/MS-Law-Journal-Books-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/MS-Law-Journal-Books-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/MS-Law-Journal-Books-2048x1364.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-58376\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A record 28 Mississippi Law Journal student members published this spring.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 The University of Mississippi <a href=\"http:\/\/law.olemiss.edu\">School of Law<\/a> has enjoyed another banner year for student publishing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-top: 0in; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: 1; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\">Twenty-eight\u00a0student members of the <a href=\"http:\/\/mississippilawjournal.org\">Mississippi Law Journal<\/a> accepted\u00a0publication offers this spring, with a record 16\u00a0of those offers coming from outside journals such as\u00a0the Gonzaga Law Review, the South Dakota Law Review, the Southern Methodist University Journal of Air Law and Commerce, and the Wake Forest Journal of Law and Policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-top: 0in; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: 1; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\">Last year, 10\u00a0students published externally, with another 19\u00a0publishing with the Mississippi Law Journal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-top: 0in; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: 1; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\">&#8220;I think this success speaks to our students&#8217; abilities,&#8221; said Ben Cooper, associate dean for academic affairs. &#8220;It is quite an achievement for our students to get their articles published in outside law journals where they are competing with law professors, practicing lawyers and judges for publication slots.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-top: 0in; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: 1; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\">This publishing success is\u00a0direct result of the\u00a0Mississippi Law Journal&#8217;s rigorous comment development program, a writing program\u00a0for the journal&#8217;s second-year members, who must author articles for potential publication as part of their membership on the journal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-top: 0in; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: 1; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\">The comment program is run\u00a0by third-year journal members C.J. Robison and Merry Johnson,\u00a0who serve as\u00a0executive notes\u00a0and comments editors. The comment program provides students with structure\u00a0and guidance from faculty,\u00a0third-year-law mentors\u00a0and their second-year\u00a0peers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">The writing process starts at the beginning of the fall semester and ends in February.\u00a0Students attend MLJ seminars, discuss paper topics, create outlines, write\u00a0drafts and finally\u00a0submit their finished work to\u00a0various journals.\u00a0Most students also write in conjunction with writing courses\u00a0taught by faculty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-top: 0in; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: 1; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\">The journal&#8217;s success in publishing is\u00a0a testament\u00a0to the school&#8217;s commitment to both teaching and research, Robinson said. Publishing can be a challenge, especially externally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">&#8220;A lot of outside journals will not publish student-written pieces&#8221; Robinson said. &#8220;They want a practitioner or professor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-top: 0in; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: 1; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\">&#8220;I think our success in publishing\u00a0is primarily attributable to two factors,&#8221; Cooper said.\u00a0&#8220;First, the hard work and dedication of our students.\u00a0Completing a comment worthy of publication requires a lot of hard work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">&#8220;Second, Professor Jack Nowlin&#8217;s outstanding and innovative Academic Legal Writing class. Professor Nowlin has put tremendous effort into developing that class and untold hours helping students improve their comments.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-top: 0in; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: 1; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\">Nowlin, the school&#8217;s associate dean and MLJ faculty adviser, heads Academic Legal Writing<i>,\u00a0<\/i>a special writing seminar\u00a0for second-year journal students. Each year,\u00a0the seminar coordinates with the journal&#8217;s comment program,\u00a0instructs half the journal&#8217;s econd-year-law members and helps train students for later third-year editorial work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-top: 0in; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: 1; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\">Nowlin is a strong supporter of student publishing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-top: 0in; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: 1; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\">&#8220;Student scholarship is very important,&#8221; Nowlin said. &#8220;It&#8217;s a chance as a student to really enter the world of the legal profession and influence law and public policy. And the skills\u00a0the students\u00a0learn \u2013 research, writing and argument \u2013 serve\u00a0them well for the rest of\u00a0their\u00a0careers. The\u00a0publication credential is also a big help with employment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-top: 0in; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: 1; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\">Besides the Academic Legal Writing class, the school offers writing seminars on a variety of\u00a0other topics such as\u00a0criminal law, constitutional law, intellectual property, civil rights, international trade and aviation law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-top: 0in; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: 1; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\">&#8220;Our faculty&#8217;s dedication to student\u00a0scholarship has been\u00a0a major\u00a0foundation of our success,&#8221; Nowlin said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-top: 0in; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: 1; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\">Cate Rodgers, a second-year law student and new editor-in-chief of the Mississippi Law Journal,\u00a0is publishing\u00a0her article with University of Denver&#8217;s\u00a0Transportation Law Journal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"margin-top: 0in; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: 1; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\">&#8220;A publication credential has many benefits,&#8221; Rodgers said. &#8220;On a personal level, a publication enhances your resume and sets you apart in the job market.
