Williams Library and three afternoon sessions at<br \/>\nthe Oxford Conference Center, the conference runs through<br \/>\nSaturday afternoon with addresses, panels and readings.<br \/>\nHighlights include a special edition of Thacker Mountain<br \/>\nRadio, a marathon book signing at Off Square Books and an<br \/>\nopen-mike poetry and fiction jam.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Conference sessions are open to the public at no charge,<br \/>\nbut registration is encouraged to assure seating space.<br \/>\nReservations and advance payment are required for two<br \/>\noptional conference events: a cocktail buffet Thursday<br \/>\n($50) and a box lunch Friday ($10). Two preconference<br \/>\nofferings that require reservations and fees are a daylong<br \/>\nwriting workshop and a literary tour of the Mississippi<br \/>\nDelta. For more information or to register for the<br \/>\nconference, call 662-915-5993 or visit<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/www.oxfordconferenceforthebook.com\/.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Although Hurston was born in 1891 and died in 1960, her<br \/>\nwork remained relatively unread until recent years but is<br \/>\nrequired reading in many classes on 20th century<br \/>\nliterature, said Ted Ownby, interim director of UM&#8217;s Center<br \/>\nfor the Study of Southern Culture.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Zora Neale Hurston gives the book conference a chance to<br \/>\nthink about a good variety of topics: her own work as a<br \/>\nnovelist, memoirist and folklorist; the connections among<br \/>\nAfrican-American literature, Southern literature and<br \/>\nCaribbean literature; her choices of topics and dialect;<br \/>\nissues of race and gender; and even the ways trends in<br \/>\nreading and scholarship can change,&#8221; Ownby said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Hurston is credited with helping bring Southern<br \/>\nAfrican-American culture to mainstream America. She is the<br \/>\nauthor of &#8220;Their Eyes Were Watching God&#8221; (HarperCollins,<br \/>\n1937), &#8220;Jonah&#8217;s Gourd Vine&#8221; (HarperCollins, 1934), &#8220;Mules<br \/>\nand Men&#8221; (HarperCollins, 1935), &#8220;Tell My Horse&#8221;<br \/>\n(HarperCollins, 1937) and more.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Among conference speakers slated to discuss Hurston&#8217;s life<br \/>\nand legacy are Patricia Willis, curator of the Collection<br \/>\nof American Literature at Yale&#8217;s Beinecke Library, authors<br \/>\nDeborah Plant and John Lowe, and literary scholars Adam<br \/>\nGussow and Ethel Young-Minor, both UM faculty members.<br \/>\nAuthors Jeffrey Renard Allen and Nichelle D. Tramble plan<br \/>\nto talk about Hurston&#8217;s influence on contemporary writers.<br \/>\nOther speakers include fiction writers Ellen Gilchrist,<br \/>\nSallie Bingham, Susan Choi and Jack Pendarvis.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Author and former Oxford resident Jonathan Miles moderates<br \/>\na panel with Dwight Garner, senior editor of the New York<br \/>\nTimes Book Review; Fredric Koeppel, book review editor at<br \/>\nthe Commercial Appeal in Memphis; and Peder Zane, book<br \/>\nreview editor at the News and Observer in Raleigh, N.C.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Film adaptations of Hurston&#8217;s fiction and a documentary<br \/>\nabout her life are to be shown. Screenings of &#8220;Their Eyes<br \/>\nWere Watching God&#8221; and other films featuring her work are<br \/>\nscheduled throughout the day and evenings<br \/>\nWednesday-Saturday at the Oxford-Lafayette County Library.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Other conference sessions include an address by literary<br \/>\nscholar Jerry Ward commemorating the 100th anniversary of<br \/>\nRichard Wright&#8217;s birth, a program marking the 40th<br \/>\nanniversary of the death of Martin Luther King Jr. and a<br \/>\ntalk by &#8220;Masterpiece Theatre&#8221; producer Rebecca Eaton.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>A panel discussion is planned to highlight poets to<br \/>\ncelebrate April&#8217;s distinction as National Poetry Month.<br \/>\nModerator is poet Beth Ann Fennelly, UM assistant professor<br \/>\nof English, with panelists including poets Rob Griffith and<br \/>\nA. Van Jordan.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>For the fifth year, a &#8220;Literature for Young Authors&#8221;<br \/>\nprogram is part of the conference. All participating<br \/>\nOxford-area fifth- and ninth-grade students receive gift<br \/>\ncopies of novels by the selected authors, courtesy of the<br \/>\nJunior Auxiliary of Oxford, the Lafayette County Literary<br \/>\nCouncil and Square Books Jr. The students are scheduled to<br \/>\nvisit campus at 9 a.m. Friday to hear award-winning author<br \/>\nChristopher Paul Curtis, who has written six books for<br \/>\nchildren and young adults, several focusing on young<br \/>\nAfrican-American boys growing up in Curtis&#8217; own hometown of<br \/>\nFlint, Mich. Following at 10:30 a.m., Margaret McMullan,<br \/>\nauthor of historic novels for younger readers, is scheduled<br \/>\nto speak.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Preceding the conference for the fifth year is the<br \/>\nMississippi Delta Literary Tour, based in Greenwood, with<br \/>\nvisits to Greenville, Clarksdale, Cleveland, Tutwiler and<br \/>\nMerigold.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;I believe this year&#8217;s tour will be among the best so far,&#8221;<br \/>\nsaid Jimmy Thomas, managing editor of the New Encyclopedia<br \/>\nof Southern Culture and tour organizer for the trip. &#8220;We&#8217;ve<br \/>\ngot a great group of folks coming from as far away as San<br \/>\nFrancisco and Connecticut; and Hillary Jordan, the Oklahoma<br \/>\nauthor of an award-winning book set in the Mississippi<br \/>\nDelta, &#8216;Mudbound,&#8217; will join us for the tour. We&#8217;re also<br \/>\nvisiting McCarty&#8217;s Pottery in Merigold and spending an<br \/>\nafternoon of talks and blues at Greenwood&#8217;s incredible<br \/>\nTurnRow Book Company.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The literary tour costs $475 per person for program<br \/>\nactivities, eight meals and local transportation. Group<br \/>\naccommodations are available at the Alluvian Hotel at a<br \/>\ndiscounted rate of $155 by calling 1-866-600-2501 and<br \/>\nrequesting the literary tour rate. Rooms also are available<br \/>\nin Greenwood at the Best Western, 662-455-5777, and Hampton<br \/>\nInn, 662-455-7985.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Also part of preconference activities is the second annual<br \/>\ndaylong workshop for writers April 2. &#8220;Mining Your Raw<br \/>\nMaterials&#8221; is to be directed by fiction writer Margaret<br \/>\nLove-Denman, an Ole Miss alumnus and former Oxford<br \/>\nresident. The workshop fee of $250 includes evaluation of a<br \/>\nmanuscript and a private session with Denman.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Conference sessions Thursday afternoon take place at the<br \/>\nOxford Conference Center, 102 Ed Perry Blvd., with Thacker<br \/>\nMountain Radio at the Powerhouse Community Arts Center, 413<br \/>\nS. 14th St. Friday morning sessions are at UM&#8217;s Ford<br \/>\nCenter, with Friday afternoon sessions at the OCC.<br \/>\nSaturday&#8217;s sessions are scheduled at UM&#8217;s Nutt Auditorium.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The conference is co-sponsored by the Center for the Study<br \/>\nof Southern Culture, Square Books, Junior Auxiliary of<br \/>\nOxford, Lafayette County-Oxford Public Library, Lafayette<br \/>\nCounty Literacy Council, Oxford Middle School PTA,<br \/>\nMississippi Library Commission and Mississippi Hills<br \/>\nHeritage Area Alliance.
