OXFORD, Miss. —<\/b> Forty fourth-graders from Lafayette
\nElementary School witnessed a staged crime and court trial
\nduring their trip to the University of Mississippi School
\nof Law Wednesday (March 26).<\/p>\n

\nThe bogus crime, a thief snatching a purse from the lectern
\nin the William N. Ethridge Jr. Moot Courtroom where the
\nprogram was held, took place in front of the student
\nassembly and interrupted Tom Clancy’s presentation about
\nwhat lawyers do on a daily basis. Clancy, professor and
\ndirector of the National Center for Justice and the Rule of
\nLaw, coordinated the program.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n


Poindexter Barnes, NCJRL network administrator, playing the
\nrole of a policeman soon apprehended a suspect and a trial
\ncommenced.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe annual program called “The Fourth Grade Initiative” is
\nan effort by the NCJRL to explain the legal profession to
\nyoung students and to educate them on the roles of
\ndifferent legal professionals such as prosecutors, defense
\nattorneys and judges. Students from Jan Mays and Vicky
\nSwindoll’s classes attended the morning program.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

Nine students from the classes were selected as jury
\nmembers. After hearing testimony from the victim, Barnes
\nand two student witnesses, a guilty verdict was returned.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOther NCJRL staff featured in the skit and their roles were
\nformer judge Don Mason, associate director, judge; former
\nprosecutor Hans Sinha, clinical professor and director of
\nprosecutorial internships, prosecutor; and former defense
\nattorney Philip Broadhead, clinical professor and director
\nof clinical appeals, defense counsel.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAnne Claire Bufkin, 10, one of the fourth-graders who
\nserved on the jury, said the jury decision was reached
\nbecause of the fingerprint and DNA evidence presented
\nlinking the defendant and the stolen purse.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“It taught me that you have to be really careful about what
\nyou say and you have to listen carefully to decide what the
\ntruth is,” she said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nStudent Keyuna Howard, 10, said the program furthered her
\ndesire to become a lawyer. “I’d like to be a lawyer because
\nthey teach important things,” she said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMays said it was a great opportunity for her students to
\nsee how the justice system works as opposed to just
\ndiscussing it in class.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“They had a great time, and they really got that real-world
\nexperience of being in a courtroom,” she said. “We’ve been
\ntalking about state government and how governments are
\nformed in class, and I heard one of the students say they
\nremembered some of the things from class. So, I think it
\nwas a really good way to reinforce what they are learning.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe program has been going on for several years, Clancy
\nsaid. “It is a wonderful opportunity for the center to give
\nyoung students some insight into the many roles that
\nlawyers have and a snapshot of how the criminal justice
\nsystem works,” he said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
