Ethridge Jr. Moot Courtroom where the<br \/>\nprogram was held, took place in front of the student<br \/>\nassembly and interrupted Tom Clancy&#8217;s presentation about<br \/>\nwhat lawyers do on a daily basis. Clancy, professor and<br \/>\ndirector of the National Center for Justice and the Rule of<br \/>\nLaw, coordinated the program.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/><span>Poindexter Barnes, NCJRL network administrator, playing the<br \/>\nrole of a policeman soon apprehended a suspect and a trial<br \/>\ncommenced.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The annual program called &#8220;The Fourth Grade Initiative&#8221; is<br \/>\nan effort by the NCJRL to explain the legal profession to<br \/>\nyoung students and to educate them on the roles of<br \/>\ndifferent legal professionals such as prosecutors, defense<br \/>\nattorneys and judges. UM photo by Robert Jordan.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Nine students from the classes were selected as jury<br \/>\nmembers. After hearing testimony from the victim, Barnes<br \/>\nand two student witnesses, a guilty verdict was returned.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Other NCJRL staff featured in the skit and their roles were<br \/>\nformer judge Don Mason, associate director, judge; former<br \/>\nprosecutor Hans Sinha, clinical professor and director of<br \/>\nprosecutorial internships, prosecutor; and former defense<br \/>\nattorney Philip Broadhead, clinical professor and director<br \/>\nof clinical appeals, defense counsel.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Anne Claire Bufkin, 10, one of the fourth-graders who<br \/>\nserved on the jury, said the jury decision was reached<br \/>\nbecause of the fingerprint and DNA evidence presented<br \/>\nlinking the defendant and the stolen purse.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;It taught me that you have to be really careful about what<br \/>\nyou say and you have to listen carefully to decide what the<br \/>\ntruth is,&#8221; she said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Student Keyuna Howard, 10, said the program furthered her<br \/>\ndesire to become a lawyer. &#8220;I&#8217;d like to be a lawyer because<br \/>\nthey teach important things,&#8221; she said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Mays said it was a great opportunity for her students to<br \/>\nsee how the justice system works as opposed to just<br \/>\ndiscussing it in class.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;They had a great time, and they really got that real-world<br \/>\nexperience of being in a courtroom,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We&#8217;ve been<br \/>\ntalking about state government and how governments are<br \/>\nformed in class, and I heard one of the students say they<br \/>\nremembered some of the things from class. So, I think it<br \/>\nwas a really good way to reinforce what they are learning.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The program has been going on for several years, Clancy<br \/>\nsaid. &#8220;It is a wonderful opportunity for the center to give<br \/>\nyoung students some insight into the many roles that<br \/>\nlawyers have and a snapshot of how the criminal justice<br \/>\nsystem works,&#8221; he said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>For more information on the National Center for Justice and<br \/>\nthe Rule of Law, visit http:\/\/www.ncjrl.org.
