\nOXFORD, Miss. – The threat of bad weather that forced an
\nindoor groundbreaking for the new law school facility
\nSaturday did not dampen the excitement surrounding the
\nevent.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nApplause, smiles and laughter filled the first floor mall
\nof the current law school as a handful of officials
\nceremoniously turned dirt in a rectangular box to signify
\nthe official beginning of the new building’s construction.
\nMore than 200 law alumni, students, faculty and friends
\nwere on hand for the event.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“You see old men dream dreams,” said William F. Goodman
\nJr., co-chair of the national steering committee. “But at
\nthis moment, we are all dreaming one collective dream: a
\nlaw school with new opportunities, respect and reputation.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n


Goodman added that his participation in the campaign to
\nbuild the new facility is a special cause to him
\npersonally. “My small part in this undertaking is not at
\nall a small event in my life,” he said.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\nThe site for the new facility on Coliseum Drive has been
\ncleared, and bids on the construction are expected in early
\nApril. The $50 million facility, with an opening date of
\nfall 2010, is to provide state-of-the-art classrooms and
\nspace for clinics. It also promises a new gateway onto the
\ncampus, Khayat said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The new facility will welcome people onto Coliseum Drive,
\nand it will be a warm Ole Miss welcome,” he said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe new facility is to feature classrooms tailored to using
\nthe Socratic method of teaching, meaning they will be
\ndesigned in a horseshoe shape to facilitate discussion and
\ninteraction. An added advantage of the project is that
\nplans call for the old law facility to be renovated to
\nprovide much needed space for undergraduate classrooms.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe new facility also is designed to add to the aesthetic
\nbeauty of the campus with a Greek style similar to that of
\nthe Lyceum. Its spaciousness is intended to provide
\nopportunities to expand the school’s existing clinical
\nprograms, as well as the two national centers located at
\nthe law school.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe building will ensure the continued success of the law
\nschool, Davis said. “As I often say, no institution stays
\ngreat or gets better by standing still,” he said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe overall campaign for the law school aims to raise $60
\nmillion, with $3 million going to scholarships, $4 million
\nto the new law library, $2 million to faculty support and
\n$1 million to clinic support. As of the groundbreaking, the
\ncampaign was approximately $5 million short of its goal.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWeekend events also included reunion dinners for the
\nclasses of 1993, 1983, 1968, 1958 and earlier.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
