\nIraq-Sulaimani, faculty members promote entrepreneurship
\nand new ways of thinking that allow every student to have a
\nvoice, the university’s chancellor told audiences Thursday
\nat the University of Mississippi.

\nOwen Cargol said during a morning lecture to Ole Miss
\nbusiness students. “It is considered very high status to
\nhave an American University in Iraq.”

\nCargol said. His lecture focused on how American ways of
\nthinking and interacting are being applied at his
\nuniversity.

\nuniversities throughout the Middle East, AIU allows
\nstudents to choose their own majors.

\nfaculty, Cargol discussed the challenges of establishing a
\nWestern-style university in a nation experiencing war,
\ncivil conflict and ethnic and religious strife. In the
\nafternoon, he addressed graduate students and faculty
\nregarding for-profit versus not-for-profit higher
\neducation, gender segregation and political and cultural
\nconstraints on the curriculum in Iraq.

\nPreviously, he was founding governor and provost of the Abu
\nDhabi University (United Arab Emirates) for four years. He
\nearned his Ed.D. in higher education administration from
\nPennsylvania State University and completed postdoctoral
\nstudies at Harvard University. He also was a Fulbright
\nscholar in the Federal Republic of Germany.
