{"id":614,"date":"2008-04-11T10:58:41","date_gmt":"2008-04-11T15:58:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/?p=614"},"modified":"2014-09-23T09:24:36","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T14:24:36","slug":"cargollecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/cargollecture\/","title":{"rendered":"Western-Style Education Brings Hope to Middle East, Iraqi Chancellor Tells UM Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nListen to Owen Cargol&#8217;s lecture<br \/>\n{enclose cargol?041008.mp3}\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>OXFORD, Miss. &#8211; At the American University of<br \/>\nIraq-Sulaimani, faculty members promote entrepreneurship<br \/>\nand new ways of thinking that allow every student to have a<br \/>\nvoice, the university&#8217;s chancellor told audiences Thursday<br \/>\nat the University of Mississippi.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;One of the most popular American exports is education,&#8221;<br \/>\nOwen Cargol said during a morning lecture to Ole Miss<br \/>\nbusiness students. &#8220;It is considered very high status to<br \/>\nhave an American University in Iraq.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>American University of Iraq-Sulaimani opened its doors to<br \/>\n50 undergraduate students and 35 MBA students in October,<br \/>\nCargol said. His lecture focused on how American ways of<br \/>\nthinking and interacting are being applied at his<br \/>\nuniversity.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Public higher education in Iraq is controlled by the<br \/>\ncentral Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific<br \/>\nResearch,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It is a very rigid and inflexible<br \/>\nsystem. UM photo by Nathan Latil.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Professors at the AUI are English-speaking and encourage<br \/>\nfree thought and classroom discussion. All voices are heard<br \/>\nand both male and female students learn to respect the<br \/>\nopinions of others despite differences. And unlike other<br \/>\nuniversities throughout the Middle East, AIU allows<br \/>\nstudents to choose their own majors.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;The hope is for Iraqi higher education, that it can enjoy<br \/>\nthis model as opposed to a centralized model,&#8221; Cargol<br \/>\nsaid.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>John Holleman, UM director of corporate relations and MBA<br \/>\nservices, said the lecture was well received.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Cargol was really able to present a cultural, educational<br \/>\nand on-the-ground look at what is happening in Iraq,&#8221;<br \/>\nHolleman said. &#8220;We all walked away with a really good<br \/>\nunderstanding of what it&#8217;s like to be in Iraq post-Saddam<br \/>\nHussein.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Ole Miss MBA candidate Ryan Cardwell, a 23-year-old Oxford<br \/>\nnative, said he enjoyed hearing Cargol&#8217;s firsthand accounts<br \/>\nof cultural differences.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;It is hard to believe that 25 percent of Ole Miss students<br \/>\nwant a degree in business, but students in Iraq view a<br \/>\nbusiness degree as less prestigious simply because those<br \/>\ndegrees were not valued under the former regime,&#8221; Cardwell<br \/>\nsaid.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Cargol, who buys students coffee if they meet with him and<br \/>\nspeak in English, said he hopes the efforts of his<br \/>\nforward-thinking university will encourage young Iraqis to<br \/>\nevolve and take advantage of new opportunities to excel.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>At both his morning lecture and a lunch seminar for<br \/>\nfaculty, Cargol discussed the challenges of establishing a<br \/>\nWestern-style university in a nation experiencing war,<br \/>\ncivil conflict and ethnic and religious strife. In the<br \/>\nafternoon, he addressed graduate students and faculty<br \/>\nregarding for-profit versus not-for-profit higher<br \/>\neducation, gender segregation and political and cultural<br \/>\nconstraints on the curriculum in Iraq.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Cargol is the founding regent chancellor and CEO of AUI.<br \/>\nPreviously, he was founding governor and provost of the Abu<br \/>\nDhabi University (United Arab Emirates) for four years. He<br \/>\nearned his Ed.D. in higher education administration from<br \/>\nPennsylvania State University and completed postdoctoral<br \/>\nstudies at Harvard University.
