Photo by Nathan Latil\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>OXFORD, Miss. &#8211; The Office of Research and Sponsored<br \/>\nPrograms honored 19 faculty members as recipients of 2008<br \/>\nFaculty Research Program grants totaling more than $209,000<br \/>\nat its annual luncheon Monday (April 7).<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Each of the fellows receives a certificate and funding to<br \/>\nsupport a research project for the upcoming year. The list<br \/>\nof honorees comprises 12 faculty from the College of<br \/>\nLiberal Arts, three from the School of Pharmacy, two from<br \/>\nthe School of Applied Sciences and one each from the<br \/>\nschools of Engineering and Business.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;The proposals selected for funding this year confirm the<br \/>\nquality of research and scholarly pursuits of our faculty<br \/>\nand staff,&#8221; said Alice Clark, vice chancellor for research<br \/>\nand sponsored programs. &#8220;The diversity of the departments<br \/>\nrepresented in this year&#8217;s class is impressive as well.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Winning proposal subjects range from the practicality of<br \/>\ntheatre lighting design to the abstract search for<br \/>\ngravitational waves. Mirroring an election year in which<br \/>\nrace and religion are prominent themes, other proposals<br \/>\nfocus on the role of legislative black caucuses and<br \/>\ndistinctions of the word &#8220;holy&#8221; in early Christianity and<br \/>\nIslam.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The program is designed to provide initial support for<br \/>\nprojects that will be of interest to external funding<br \/>\nagencies, with priority given to junior faculty who are<br \/>\nestablishing research programs.
