\nGregory Schirmer\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
OXFORD, Miss. – Gregory Schirmer, professor of English, has
\nbeen honored as this year’s top teacher at the University
\nof Mississippi.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nSchirmer was presented the campuswide 2008 Elsie M. Hood
\nOutstanding Teacher Award Thursday evening at the
\nuniversity’s 65th Honors Day Convocation. The ceremony also
\nincluded recognition of 46 students who were awarded Marcus
\nElvis Taylor Memorial Medals, the university’s highest
\nacademic award.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nAnnouncing Schirmer as the Hood Award recipient, Chancellor
\nRobert Khayat said, “This year’s recipient has the good
\nfortune to teach a subject that can inspire any dedicated
\nstudent. For nearly 25 years, he has taught poetry and
\nliterature at Ole Miss. He has opened many minds to the
\nworld of great literature.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nFaculty, staff, students and alumni look forward to the
\nannouncement of the outstanding teacher because the award
\n“recognizes excellence in the classroom and sensitivity to
\nthe students’ needs,” Khayat said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nSchirmer said that he was both humbled and flattered by the
\nhonor.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“I was, honestly, quite stunned when I was told I had won
\nthis award,” Schirmer said. “The Hood Award is particularly
\nmeaningful to me because the selection process depends so
\nheavily on student input. It’s very moving to think of
\nstudents that I’ve taught over the years taking the trouble
\nto write letters recommending me for it.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nIn one Hood Award nomination letter for Schirmer, a student
\ncommented, “(Schirmer) brings a passion to the classroom
\nthat demands attention … (O)ne can tell he loves his
\nsubject, and it is infectious.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nSchirmer, who joined the Ole Miss faculty in 1984, said,
\n“There are many, many fine teachers at this university
\nwhose work is equally – if not more – deserving of this
\nkind of recognition. I would also like to note that this
\nuniversity has been most generous in supporting my research
\never since I arrived.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nBefore coming to UM, Schirmer taught at the University of
\nNotre Dame and Vanderbilt University.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nA native of Freeport, Ill., he completed his doctoral
\ndegree from Stanford University, where he also gained some
\nteaching experience while a graduate student. He earned his
\nbachelor’s degree at the University of Illinois and his
\nmaster’s in journalism at Columbia University. He worked
\nfor eight years as a journalist, first at the Wall Street
\nJournal and then at Newsday. Schrimer earned a second
\nmaster’s degree in English from State University of New
\nYork at Stony Brook before entering Stanford.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nSchirmer, whose primary field of specialization is Irish
\nliterature, has taught a variety of courses in this area,
\nseveral courses in British literature and two courses in
\nShakespeare. His sixth book, “After the Irish: An Anthology
\nof Poetic Translation,” is slated for publication next year
\nby Cork University Press in Ireland.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nHe and his wife, Jane Mullen, an accomplished writer of
\nnovels and short stories, are the parents of four
\nchildren.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe Outstanding Teacher Award has been a tradition at Ole
\nMiss since 1966. In 1988, Mr. and Mrs. Warren A. Hood Sr.
\nof Jackson made a gift to endow the award, and it was named
\nthe Elsie M. Hood Outstanding Teacher Award in Mrs. Hood’s
\nhonor. In 2000, the Hoods made another gift to support the
\naward so that it will continue in perpetuity.
