OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 The University of Mississippi Department of Campus Recreation<\/a> invites runners and outdoors enthusiasts to compete in the third annual Rebel Trail Challenge, a 5-mile obstacle race that participants must complete as a duo, on Nov. 12.<\/p>\n

The course features six obstacles \u2013 including multiple rope challenges, a scaling wall and more \u2013 on the South Campus Rail Trail, just west of Chucky Mullins Drive. The race begins at 8:30 a.m.<\/p>\n

“Whether you are a beginner or a veteran, we have seven divisions to fit your needs,” said Shannon Richardson, UM assistant director of campus recreation. “So find a partner and register today because space is limited.”<\/p>\n

Registration for the trail challenge can be completed online<\/a> in a few steps. All participants must be at least 10 years old to compete, and those under 16 must register in the youth division.<\/p>\n

The race fee is $25 per person, and proceeds benefit the Bill Kingery Outstanding Student Scholarship Fund. The scholarships are given annually to student employees in the campus recreation department.<\/p>\n

This challenge promotes not only partnership, but also a fun way to be healthy and enjoy the outdoors with others. Organizers are seeking volunteers, and all helpers get free T-shirts.<\/p>\n

“This race is going to be a great way for me to challenge myself and bond with my sister, Hannah,” said Emma Mitchell, a UM business major. “We have both been working extremely hard to better ourselves physically and mentally. We can do this and build a stronger bond all at the same time.”<\/p>\n

Check-in starts at 7:30 a.m. and racers will assemble at the starting line at 8:15 a.m. Campus Recreation staff suggests that participants bring the following items on race day:<\/p>\n

– Wool and\/or polypropylene-layered clothing and socks<\/p>\n

– Windbreaker or light jacket<\/p>\n

– Running shoes (trail running shoes preferred)<\/p>\n

– Warm hat<\/p>\n

– Sunscreen and sunglasses<\/p>\n

– Personal medications<\/p>\n

– Water and high-energy snacks<\/p>\n

“This event appeals to the entire Lafayette-Oxford-University community because it’s open to runners ages 10 and up,” Richardson said. “It’s the only adventure-race style event in our area.”<\/p>\n
