\nOXFORD, Miss. Thirty high school students are to be
\naccepted in a selective four-week summer intensive Chinese
\nlanguage program scheduled for July at the University of
\nMississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nStarTalk, a government initiative aimed at increasing the
\nnumber of Americans learning critical-need languages, has
\nawarded $120,000 to UM’s Department of Modern Languages.
\nThe funding for “StarTalk Two: Intensive Chinese” provides
\nthe selected students with full tuition and fees, housing,
\nbooks and meal plans. Applications for the competitive
\nselection process are being accepted through April 18.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“StarTalk Two is a wonderful opportunity to be involved in
\nthe study of Chinese at an earlier age than is normal for
\nAmerican students,” said Donald Dyer, chair of modern
\nlanguages. “The University of Mississippi, which has
\ndeveloped one of the country’s leading Chinese programs, is
\npleased to offer this opportunity to the public again.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nYi Lin, assistant professor of Chinese, has taught her
\nnative tongue in America for more than a decade. Mastering
\nthe language, which is measured by attaining superior
\nproficiency in both spoken and written language, can
\nrequire more than 15 years of formal instruction, she
\nsaid.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The sounds do not correspond with the characters,” Lin
\nsaid. “Memorization is very important.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nA native of the coastal Shandong Province in eastern China,
\nLin said the largest hurdle for Americans in learning
\nChinese is grasping both the written and oral aspects.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Native speakers grow up hearing the sounds, so they only
\nmust learn to read and write,” Lin said. “For Americans (to
\nlearn Chinese), they must learn the sounds too, which makes
\nit very difficult.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
