\nOXFORD, Miss. – The third Annual Dr. T. P. Vinson Memorial
\nScholarship 5K Walk\/Run is scheduled Saturday (April 12) at
\nthe University of Mississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nStarting from the Lyceum Circle, participants race through
\ncampus to raise money for the minority scholarship in the
\nSchool of Education. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., with
\nthe race starting at 8. The winning male and female each
\nreceive a $50 prize and trophy, made possible by Baptist
\nMemorial Hospital-North Mississippi and the Trophy Shop.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe entry fee for individuals is $25 and includes a
\nT-shirt. Teams can also be formed at a cost of $250, which
\nincludes 10 T-shirts. Register by 4 p.m. Wednesday and
\nreceive five free raffle tickets for gift certificates to
\nthe Downtown Grill or Two Stick; baseball, basketball and
\nfootball autographed by Ole Miss coaches; tickets to the
\nOle Miss v. LSU baseball series; tickets to the Grove Bowl
\nand more. Additional raffle tickets are $1 each.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“In the past, our annual fundraiser has been so successful
\nthat we were able to double our annual scholarship award
\nthis year,” said Germain McConnell, acting assistant dean
\nof education. “We hope to experience even greater success
\nat the event.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nKnown to friends as “T. P.” or “Thea,” short for Theopolis,
\nVinson was an outstanding teacher and administrator in UM’s
\nSchool of Education from 1989 until his untimely death in
\n2003. He served as director of undergraduate advising and
\nrecords, assistant dean, and assistant professor of
\ncurriculum and instruction. He also taught, advised and
\nrecruited students for UM’s Oxford, Southaven and Tupelo
\ncampuses.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe $1,000 Dr. T.P. Vinson Memorial Scholarship is awarded
\nannually to a full-time junior or senior black student who
\ndemonstrates extraordinary leadership ability and community
\nservice in the teacher education program.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
