OXFORD, Miss. – The chancellor of the American University
\nof Iraq-Sulaimani visits the University of Mississippi
\nThursday (April 10).
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nOwen Cargol is scheduled to meet with UM administrators and
\ninteract with students, faculty and staff throughout the
\nday, including two public events.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nCargol’s discussions are expected to focus on the steps
\nthat have been taken to start the Western-style American
\nUniversity of Iraq, similar to institutions founded decades
\nago in Beirut and Cairo. Established in 2007, AUI-S is
\nenvisioned to become the foremost educational institution
\nin developing future leaders for the Middle East.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nAll UM students are invited to attend a seminar at 10:30
\na.m. in Conner Hall, Room 110. The 45-minute presentation
\nis to provide an overview of the activity involved in
\nestablishing a Western-style university in a nation
\nexperiencing war, civil conflict, ethnic and religious
\nstrife.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nCargol has scheduled a free, public seminar noon-1:30 p.m.
\nin Conner Hall, Room 110. Lunch is to be provided for
\nattendees, and UM faculty and staff are encouraged to
\nattend. Reservations are required by e-mailing
\njholleman@bus.olemiss.edu by noon Wednesday.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nAt 3 p.m. in Lyceum 200, Cargol plans to address graduate
\nstudents and faculty about for-profit versus not-for-profit
\nhigher education, gender segregation, and political and
\ncultural constraints on the curriculum in Iraq. The event
\nis also open to the public at no charge.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“The University of Mississippi is well respected both for
\nits academic programs and its international outreach
\nefforts,” Cargol said. “As such, the American University
\nhas a particular interest in exploring with Ole Miss
\nofficials the possibilities for future collaboration.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nUM is honored to host Cargol, said John Holleman, director
\nof corporate relations and MBA services in the UM School of
\nBusiness Administration.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Given that the American University of Iraq is modeled
\nafter the famous, Western-style universities in Cairo and
\nBeirut, and that its students are the future leaders of
\nIraqi Kurdistan, it’s a high honor to be able to host Dr.
\nOwen Cargol,” Holleman said. “I believe our university
\ncommunity will come away from his visit much more informed
\non the unique and challenging circumstances faced by Iraqi
\nKurdistans as we hear about the important work being done
\nat the American University of Iraq.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nCargol is the founding regent chancellor and CEO of the
\nAmerican University of Iraq-Sulaimani. Previously, he was
\nthe founding governor and provost of the Abu Dhabi
\nUniversity (United Arab Emirates) for four years. He earned
\nhis Ed.D. in higher education administration from
\nPennsylvania State University and completed postdoctoral
\nstudies at Harvard University. He also was a Fulbright
\nscholar in the Federal Republic of Germany.
