OXFORD, Miss. – Richard Stengel, managing editor of Time,
\ndelivers the third annual Stuart J. Bullion Lecture in
\nJournalism April 21 at the University of Mississippi.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\nSponsored by the Department of Journalism, the free, public
\npresentation is scheduled for 9 a.m. in Overby Center
\nAuditorium (first floor).
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nSamir Husni, journalism chair, said he is honored to have
\nsomeone of Stengel’s caliber to deliver the lecture
\nhonoring the late Stuart Bullion, department chair from
\n1997 to 2004.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Since becoming managing editor of Time, Stengel has
\nreinvented the news weekly and the role it plays in today’s
\njournalistic environment,” Husni said. “Stengel’s vision
\nand the work he is doing at Time reminds me of the original
\nvision of Henry Luce, the founder of Time magazine.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nLindsey Phillips, a junior journalism major from Ocean
\nSprings, said she’s looking forward to having someone
\naffiliated with “a company as impressive as Time come to
\nOle Miss.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“I’m really looking forward to Mr. Stengel’s talk,”
\nPhillips said. “He has reinvented Time and I know he’ll
\nhave a lot of information to share with us.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nNamed managing editor in May 2006, Stengel oversees the
\nworld’s largest weekly news magazine, with 27 million
\nreaders worldwide; Time.com, which draws more than 5
\nmillion visitors a month; and Time’s other brand
\nextensions, including Time Style & Design and Time for
\nKids.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nStengel’s long history with Time includes posts as national
\nand cultural editor, as well as editor of Time.com. Also,
\nas a senior writer and essayist, he covered both the 1988
\nand 1996 presidential campaigns. He has also written for
\nThe New Yorker, The New Republic and The New York Times.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nAmong his other notable achievements, Stengel collaborated
\nwith Nelson Mandela on Mandela’s best-selling 1993
\nautobiography “Long Walk to Freedom” and later served as
\nco-producer of the 1996 Oscar-nominated documentary
\n“Mandela.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nStengel has written several books, including “January Sun:
\nOne Day, Three Loves, A South African Town” and “You’re Too
\nKind: A Brief History of Flattery.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nA native New Yorker, Stengel graduated magna cum laude from
\nPrinceton University in 1977 and played on its 1975
\nNIT-winning basketball team. As a Rhodes Scholar, he
\nstudied English and history at Christ Church College,
\nOxford. He is married to Mary Pfaff and they are the
\nparents of two sons.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nBorn in Minneapolis, Bullion graduated in 1969 from
\nPrinceton University, where he majored in French and
\nEuropean civilization. He earned master’s and doctoral
\ndegrees in mass communication from the University of
\nMinnesota in 1978 and 1982.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nShortly before his death in April 2004, Bullion expressed
\ninterest in beginning a memorial lectureship for the Ole
\nMiss journalism department. Following his death, friends
\nand family established the lecture series in his memory.
\nThe first lecture was held in 2006.
