\nOXFORD, Miss. – The University of Mississippi Department of
\nAquatics is offering UM students and area residents a
\nchance to become lifeguards with its Red
\nCross-certification class, scheduled the last two weekends
\nin April at the Turner Center.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nWith classes set for April 19, 20, 26 and 27, the course
\nwill accommodate an unlimited number of signees who meet
\nthe physical requirements. Participants must attend all
\nfour days of instruction to gain certification. Classes run
\n10 a.m.-6 p.m. each day and the cost is $175, which
\nincludes the instruction book, mask and certification.
\nScholarships are available for those interested in joining
\nthe Ole Miss Aquatics lifeguard team.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPhysical requirements for the course include being able to
\ncomplete a 500-yard swim using rhythmic breathing in a
\ncombination of breast stroke and freestyle swimming,
\nretrieving a pool brick from the bottom of the pool and
\nreturning it to the other side of the pool while holding
\nthe brick at chest level with both hands, and the ability
\nto tread water for 10 minutes.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nInstruction for each class will alternate between water
\nwork and classroom work.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Only about 30 percent of lifeguarding is in water skills,
\nwith a high emphasis on preventing accidents,” said Mark
\nGarneau, assistant director of campus recreation and
\naquatics. “This course also includes CPR, first aid and
\nautomatic external defibrillation.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe course is usually offered several times each semester;
\nhowever, pool repairs early this spring delayed this year’s
\nclasses, Garneau said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
