OXFORD, Miss. – An award-winning University of Mississippi
\nfaculty author has scheduled a promotional appearance to
\ncelebrate her fourth and latest book.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nBeth Ann Fennelly, associate professor of English, is
\nslated to read from “Unmentionables: Poems” (W.W. Norton,
\n2008) April 18 at Off Square Books, 129 Courthouse Square,
\nin Oxford. She plans to autograph purchased copies
\nbeginning at 5 p.m., with the reading to follow. The event
\nis free and open to the public.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Divided into seven sections, the book explores the
\nunmentionable – not only what is too bold to be mentioned
\nbut what can’t be said because the intended listener is
\nunavailable or because our language is insufficient,” said
\nFennelly, winner of the 2002 Kenyon Review Prize and the
\nGLAC New Writers Award for “Open House” (Zoo Press, 2002).
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“These poems investigate the mystery of human relationships
\n– between lovers, family members, individuals and society,
\nourselves and our perception of ourselves.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nEven before its April 7 release, the volume had attracted
\ncritical acclaim.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“(Fennelly) is a phenomenon,” wrote a reviewer for The
\nMissouri Review. A critic in The Harvard Review described
\nFennelly as “one of the most exciting poets of her
\ngeneration.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nFennelly is accustomed to literary praise. Her chapbook “A
\nDifferent Kind of Hunger” (Texas Review Press, 1997) also
\nwon the 1997 Texas Review Breakthrough Award.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nNotre Dame Review critic Jeff Roessner wrote, “The dynamic
\nsense of life distilled in Fennelly’s verse, along with her
\ngifted use of personae, provide clear evidence of her
\nunique and compelling voice.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nFennelly indicates that her latest poetry collection ranges
\nwidely in subject matter and form.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“I wrote ‘The Kudzu Chronicles’ because I started thinking
\nabout how when I moved to Mississippi I felt that the
\nrolling, verdant landscape spoke to me in a way that the
\nprairies of Illinois, where I was raised, did not,”
\nFennelly said. “I wrote ‘Berte Morisot: Retrospective’
\nafter I took a tour of the National Gallery in Washington,
\nD.C. While writing this poem, I was able to explore the
\ndecisions a female artist makes when balancing fulfillment
\nin one’s personal life versus fulfillment in art.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nA graduate of the University of Notre Dame and University
\nof Arkansas, Fennelly was a recipient of the Diane
\nMiddlebrook Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of
\nWisconsin. A member of the UM faculty since 2003, she
\nteaches creative writing courses.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nFennelly is a Pushcart Prize winner and has been listed
\nthree times, 1996, 2005 and 2006, in The Best American
\nPoetry Series. She read her poetry at the Library of
\nCongress at the invitation of the U.S. poet laureate.
