OXFORD, Miss. – University of Mississippi Foundation
\npresident Wendell Weakley and his wife, Sue, have honored
\ntheir three daughters with a bequest that will create an
\nOle Miss Women’s Council scholarship endowment.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\n“You cannot imagine how much this means to the members of
\nthe council,” said Jan Farrington, chair of the Ole Miss
\nWomen’s Council. “Wendell has been most supportive of our
\nprogram since becoming president of the foundation. This
\nbequest to set up a Women’s Council scholarship to honor
\nhis three daughters is a confirmation that our mission is
\nimportant and that our work is appreciated. We are deeply
\ngrateful to Wendell and Sue not only for the gift, but also
\nfor setting the example for others.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nWeakley said one reason he was inspired to make the gift is
\nbecause of his role on the new Deferred and Planned Giving
\nSociety Committee. This committee promotes the 1848
\nSociety, which recognizes alumni and friends of the
\nuniversity who have either funded or planned a deferred
\ngift, such as a bequest or a life income plan.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Planned giving has such a tremendous impact on our
\nuniversity and its endowment,” Weakley said. “Our mission
\nis to inform as many of our alumni and friends as possible.
\nWe want to educate them on the endless possibilities of
\ncrafting a tax-wise gift to the university and encourage
\nthem to step forward during the Momentum campaign.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe Sloan, Allison and Elizabeth Weakley Women’s Council
\nScholarship Endowment is also a gift that holds special
\nmeaning to the entire Weakley family, he said. Both Weakley
\nand his wife are UM alumni and have deep love for the
\nuniversity.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Ole Miss is where my heart is, and Sue and I have our
\nroots here,” he said. “There is something positively
\ndifferent about the Ole Miss-Oxford experience. I know my
\ndaughters, two of whom are also UM graduates, feel the same
\nway.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nAllison Weakley Sutherland, who works as an auditor at KPMG
\nin Memphis, Tenn., earned both her bachelor’s and master’s
\ndegrees in accountancy from UM, in 2002 and 2003. Her
\nhusband, Ashley Sutherland, earned a bachelor’s degree in
\nbusiness from UM in 2002.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Growing up in a female-dominated household and having a
\ndaughter of my own, it is important to me to support other
\nwomen and personify the support women can provide to this
\ngreat university,” Allison said. “My parents set such a
\nwonderful example of how important education is. It was
\nalways understood that we would not only go to college but
\nthat we would all obtain master’s degrees. I am so thankful
\nthat my parents set up this scholarship in our honor so
\nthat other students can pursue an education and become
\nleaders.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nSloan Weakley Galloway, who works as learning specialist
\nwith Audio Visual Innovations in Atlanta, also earned two
\ndegrees from UM, in 2000 and 2001. She holds a bachelor’s
\ndegree in elementary education and a master’s degree in
\ncurriculum and instruction.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“I am extremely honored. I can’t think of a higher tribute
\nto our family than to have a scholarship in our names at
\nOle Miss,” Sloan said. “I am so proud of my dad for doing
\nthis. Ole Miss is probably my favorite place to visit, not
\nonly because of the memories and friendships I made while I
\nattended there but also because I think of Ole Miss as part
\nof my family. The scholarships will allow future
\ngenerations of students to experience the Ole Miss family
\nand the guidance and mentoring I experienced in growing up
\nin that environment.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nElizabeth Knox Weakley is a student at the University of
\nColorado but still feels a strong connection to Ole Miss
\nbecause of her family’s history with the school. She said
\nshe has been coming to Ole Miss games with her older
\nsisters since she was born. She also attends Ole Miss each
\nsummer when she returns home from Boulder.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nWeakley said he and his wife chose to support the Ole Miss
\nWomen’s Council because they believe in its mission to
\nidentify and nurture outstanding young men and women of
\ntoday, in hopes of creating future leaders of a more caring
\nand ethical society.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“I have a very strong belief in the Women’s Council because
\nof the leadership\/mentorship program aspects,” Weakley
\nsaid. “This program goes well beyond financial needs; it
\nmeets the needs of maturing students who will lead us
\ntomorrow. It’s our duty to provide a little guidance along
\nthe way to ensure the future success of our alumni.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nWeakley’s gift is part of the university’s MomentUM
\ncampaign, a four-year initiative to raise $200 million. The
\ncampaign, which ends in December 2008, already has raised
\nmore than $180 million for scholarships, graduate
\nfellowships, faculty support, a basketball practice
\nfacility, residential colleges and a new law school on the
\nOxford campus. Also in the plans is a cancer center at the
\nUM Medical Center in Jackson.
