\nOXFORD, Miss. – In recognition of National Sexual Assault
\nAwareness Month, the University of Mississippi’s Sarah Isom
\nCenter is co-sponsoring a week of events to mark National
\nCrime Victims’ Rights Week, Saturday through Thursday
\n(April 12-17).
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nOther sponsors include UM’s Feminist Majority group and the
\nFamily Crisis Center of North Mississippi. The Feminist
\norganization is “an equal rights group that focuses on
\nwomen’s rights and equality regardless of sex, race and
\ngender,” said Feminist Majority’s president Meghan Oswalt.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe week kicks off Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with the Square
\nBooks Junior Book Reading and Craft Project. Throughout the
\nweek, workshops about the Clothesline Project, a program
\nthat addresses the issue of violence against women, are
\nplanned. These workshops are scheduled in the Student
\nUnion. Monday evening features a sexual assault awareness
\npresentation with the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTo end the week, a candlelight vigil in recognition of
\nNational Crime Victims’ Awareness Week, followed by a
\ndramatic reading of Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues,”
\nbegins at 8:30 p.m Thursday in the Ford Center’s rehearsal
\nhall.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe reading is a first for this series of events, said Mary
\nCarruth, director of the Isom Center.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“What’s distinctive this year about the ‘Monologues’ is
\nthat they are being read by members of the Ole Miss chapter
\nof the Feminist Majority, who will have just returned from
\nthe V-Day’s 10th anniversary events in New Orleans April
\n12,” Carruth said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nV-Day is an effort to bring the issue of violence against
\nwomen and girls “front and center in the culture and
\ncommunity,”says the event’s Web site, http:\/\/www.vday.org.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThirteen members of the Feminist Majority will be attending
\nthe conference in New Orleans, Oswalt said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We wanted to see a different version of the play so that
\nwe could gain insight into the various monologues and
\ndifferent ways of performing them,” she said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe latest production of “The Vagina Monologues” features a
\nnew segment “written in honor of the women who were
\naffected by Katrina,” Oswalt said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nickets to the program are $6 for students and $10 for
\nnonstudents can be purchased at the UM Box Office in the
\nOle Miss Student Union, in person, online or by telephone
\n915-7411; Ford Center Box Office; and at the door (arrive
\nat 8 p.m.). All proceeds go to Family Crisis Services.
