\nOXFORD, Miss. – More than 250 scientists from around the
\nworld are gathering in Oxford this weekend to discuss
\nmedicinal plants and dietary supplements at the Seventh
\nAnnual Oxford International Conference on the Science of
\nBotanicals and the Fourth Interim Meeting of the American
\nSociety of Pharmacognosy.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe event opens Saturday (April 12) at the Oxford
\nConference Center and runs through Wednesday. It is hosted
\nby the University of Mississippi’s National Center for
\nNatural Products Research and the School of Pharmacy’s
\nDepartment of Pharmacognosy.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe purpose of the conference is to review, discuss and
\nexplore methods for determining the identity, purity,
\nquality and processing of plants.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This conference is one of a kind in North America where
\neminent scientists from the international community come
\ntogether to discuss the issues related to botanicals and
\nimprove the safety and quality of botanical products based
\non scientific knowledge,” said Ikhlas A. Khan, assistant
\ndirector of NCNPR and program director for the center’s
\nFood and Drug Administration program.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTopic areas include authentication, cultivation, collection
\nand post-harvest practices for producing quality botanical
\nplant material and incorporating chemical and toxicological
\nmethods for quality\/safety assessment that are required for
\nthe preclinical evaluation of botanicals. The conference
\nalso includes sessions focusing on pharmacognosy
\ntechniques, issues and discoveries.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe keynote speaker is Dr. Josephine Briggs, director of
\nthe National Center for Complementary and Alternative
\nMedicine within the National Institutes of Health. She is
\nto address the importance of botanicals in complementary
\nand alternative medicine.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThis year’s conference is co-sponsored by the Center for
\nFood Safety and Applied Nutrition with the FDA, the
\nShanghai Institute of Materia Medica\/Chinese Academy of
\nSciences, the Council of Scientific and Industrial
\nResearch, and the Society for Medicinal Plant Research.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPart of the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences,
\nNCNPR is the nation’s only university research center
\ndevoted to improving human health and agricultural
\nproductivity through the discovery, development, and
\ncommercialization of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals
\nderived from plants, marine organisms and other natural
\nproducts.
