\nOXFORD, Miss. – A University of Mississippi civil engineer
\nis featured in the March edition of a prestigious online
\nsite that tracks trends and performance in basic research.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nAlexander H.D. Cheng, chair and professor of civil
\nengineering, appears in the Fast Moving Fronts section of
\nScienceWatch.com by Thomson Scientific. Thomson Scientific
\nis the company that owns the Science Citation Index and the
\nWeb of Science online citation database.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe interview focuses on the growing popularity of Cheng’s
\narticle: “Exponential convergence and H-c multiquadric
\ncollocation method for partial differential equations.”
\nSince its publication in 2003, the paper has been highly
\ncited by other researchers in the mathematics field. A
\nfollow-up paper, “Error estimate, optimal shape factor, and
\nhigh precision computation of multiquadric collocation
\nmethod,” was published in 2007.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nCheng said engineering and science problems are often
\nexpressed in the form of mathematical equations known as
\npartial differential equations. While the goal is to solve
\nthese equations accurately and efficiently, the full
\nrealization of such accuracy was blocked by the computer’s
\ninability to carry enough digits in the computation.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Our work overcame this issue and we have discovered one of
\nthe most accurate numerical methods,” Cheng said. “There is
\nstill a long way to go to make it as competitive and
\npopular as the finite element method, but I believe that it
\nwill one day become an important branch of numerical
\nmethodology, one which offers scientific and engineering
\nsolutions which contribute to the long-term sustainability
\nof humanity.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nApplication of the multiquadric collocation method in
\nsolving many engineering problems is needed and software
\ndevelopment will be the key factor leading to widespread
\nindustrial use, Cheng said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nCheng was presented the 2007 Outstanding Engineering
\nFaculty Member Award for his excellence in classroom
\nteaching, scholarly research and professional service. His
\n2005 article, “Heritage and early history of the boundary
\nelement method,” was the most downloaded paper for two
\nquarters in 2005 in the Computational Engineering category,
\naccording to Elsevier’s ScienceDirect.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Citation by peers is an important measure of the impact of
\none’s research,” said Kai-Fong Lee, engineering dean. “The
\nSchool of Engineering is proud that one of Dr. Cheng’s
\nresearch papers has made an important contribution in the
\nnumerical solution of partial differential equations, upon
\nwhich many practical engineering problems are formulated.”
