Cheng, chair and professor of civil<br \/>\nengineering, appears in the Fast Moving Fronts section of<br \/>\nScienceWatch.com by Thomson Scientific. Thomson Scientific<br \/>\nis the company that owns the Science Citation Index and the<br \/>\nWeb of Science online citation database.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The interview focuses on the growing popularity of Cheng&#8217;s<br \/>\narticle: &#8220;Exponential convergence and H-c multiquadric<br \/>\ncollocation method for partial differential equations.&#8221;<br \/>\nSince its publication in 2003, the paper has been highly<br \/>\ncited by other researchers in the mathematics field. A<br \/>\nfollow-up paper, &#8220;Error estimate, optimal shape factor, and<br \/>\nhigh precision computation of multiquadric collocation<br \/>\nmethod,&#8221; was published in 2007.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Cheng said engineering and science problems are often<br \/>\nexpressed in the form of mathematical equations known as<br \/>\npartial differential equations. While the goal is to solve<br \/>\nthese equations accurately and efficiently, the full<br \/>\nrealization of such accuracy was blocked by the computer&#8217;s<br \/>\ninability to carry enough digits in the computation.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Our work overcame this issue and we have discovered one of<br \/>\nthe most accurate numerical methods,&#8221; Cheng said. &#8220;There is<br \/>\nstill a long way to go to make it as competitive and<br \/>\npopular as the finite element method, but I believe that it<br \/>\nwill one day become an important branch of numerical<br \/>\nmethodology, one which offers scientific and engineering<br \/>\nsolutions which contribute to the long-term sustainability<br \/>\nof humanity.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Application of the multiquadric collocation method in<br \/>\nsolving many engineering problems is needed and software<br \/>\ndevelopment will be the key factor leading to widespread<br \/>\nindustrial use, Cheng said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Cheng was presented the 2007 Outstanding Engineering<br \/>\nFaculty Member Award for his excellence in classroom<br \/>\nteaching, scholarly research and professional service. His<br \/>\n2005 article, &#8220;Heritage and early history of the boundary<br \/>\nelement method,&#8221; was the most downloaded paper for two<br \/>\nquarters in 2005 in the Computational Engineering category,<br \/>\naccording to Elsevier&#8217;s ScienceDirect.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Citation by peers is an important measure of the impact of<br \/>\none&#8217;s research,&#8221;
