\nOXFORD, Miss. – The Mississippi Early Music Ensemble
\nperforms a concert Monday (April 21) at the University of
\nMississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe 8 p.m. program in Nutt Auditorium of the Music Building
\nis free and open to the public. Soloists include UM music
\nfaculty Cynthia Linton and Debra Spurgeon, and music
\nstudents Kevin Dyess and Christian Feazell, both of Oxford;
\nPaul Gamble of Tchula and Davis Jones of Sunnyside, N.Y.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nCo-directed by music faculty Laurdella Foulkes-Levy and
\nDavid Warren Steel, the ensemble specializes in the
\ninterpretation of European music before 1700. Besides
\nchoral and solo vocal music, the group performs on a number
\nof instruments, including trumpets, timpani, violin, viola,
\nrecorders, viola da gamba and harpsichord.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe evening repertoire includes French chansons from the
\nRenaissance and passionate “madrigals of love and war” by
\nearly baroque composer Claudio Monteverdi, Steel said. The
\nconcert also features work by English composer Henry
\nPurcell that depicts the four seasons.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This masque was originally inserted in a revival of
\nShakespeare’s ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ as an entertainment
\nfor Oberon’s birthday; the four seasons appear as
\ncharacters, offering their fruits to the sun god, who is
\nacclaimed as the ‘parent’ of the seasons and of life on
\nearth,” Steel said. “Purcell’s dramatic treatment may be
\ncompared to other works on the seasons by Lully, Vivaldi,
\nHaydn, Tchaikovsky and John Cage.”
