\nhigher education for the Board of Trustees of State
\nInstitutions of Higher Learning, as its 2008 Alumnus of the
\nYear.

\nstarted his career in education as a high school teacher
\nand later became a high school principal.

\nSystem of Georgia and chancellor of the University of
\nAlabama System. He also served as president and professor
\nof education at Western Kentucky University; vice
\nchancellor for executive affairs, adjunct professor of
\nhigher education and executive assistant to the chancellor
\nat UM; and academic programs officer and associate director
\nfor programs and planning for the Mississippi IHL.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
\npresentations of faculty awards for the 2007-08 academic
\nyear. The outstanding teacher honor went to Jerilou Moore,
\nassistant professor of curriculum and instruction; the
\noutstanding researcher award was presented to K. B. Melear,
\nassistant professor of leadership and counselor education;
\nand the grant writer of the year award went to Angela
\nBarlow, associate professor of curriculum and instruction.
\nEach recipient, all of whom were nominated by their peers,
\nreceived a $2,000 honorarium.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
\ncompleted UM’s World Class Teacher Program, a mentoring
\nservice to help them become national board certified. Of
\nthe 159 teachers across Mississippi to become nationally
\ncertified, more than half sought assistance from the WCTP.
\nMississippi ranks third per capita in the nation to have
\nnational board-certified teachers.
