\nconstruction is open to the public throughout the week. The
\nprocess begins with the opening ceremony at noon April 28,
\nduring which the lamas consecrate the site and call forth
\nthe forces of goodness with chanting, music and mantra
\nrecitation. The closing ceremony is set for 1 p.m. May 2.

\nHistoric Houses is hosting “Tibet: Magical Land of
\nSpiritual Wonders,” a photo exhibit of 21 stunning color
\nimages taken by some of the world’s foremost photographic
\nartists. Images include the Potala Palace (home of the
\nDalai Lama), the Yumbu Lagang (Tibet’s first castle), the
\nJokhang (Tibet’s first temple) and Samye (Tibet’s first
\nmonastery), as well as other spiritually important and
\nculturally significant subjects. The exhibit opened this
\nweek and runs through May 11. Museum hours are 9:30
\na.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 1-4:30 p.m. Sunday.

\nexquisite. Millions of grains of sand are painstakingly
\nlaid into place on a platform over a period of days or
\nweeks to form the image of a mandala. The monks have
\ncreated mandala sand paintings at more than 100 museums,
\nart centers, colleges and universities in the United States
\nand Europe.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
\ncosmograms can be created in various media, such as
\nwatercolor on canvas and wood carvings. However, the most
\nspectacular and enduringly popular are those made from
\ncolored sand.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
\nmeanings. On the outer level, they represent the world in
\nits divine form; on the inner level, they represent a map
\nby which the ordinary human mind is transformed into an
\nenlightened mind; and on the secret level, they depict the
\nprimordially perfect balance of the subtle energies of the
\nbody and the clear light dimension of the mind. The
\ncreation of a sand painting is said to effect purification
\nand healing on these three levels.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
\nmandala on a wooden platform. On the following days they
\nlay the colored sands. Each monk holds a traditional metal
\nfunnel, called a chakpur, while running a metal rod on its
\ngrated surface. The vibration causes the sands to flow like
\nliquid onto the platform.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
\nafter their completion. This is done as a metaphor for the
\nimpermanence of life. The sands are swept up and placed in
\nan urn; to fulfill the function of healing, half is
\ndistributed to the audience at the closing ceremony, while
\nthe remainder is carried to a nearby body of water, where
\nit is deposited. The waters then carry the healing blessing
\nto the ocean, and from there it spreads throughout the
\nworld for planetary healing.
