OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Mississippi Greek Council
\nhas given $11,000 to the Friends of the Children’s
\nHospital, the nonprofit organization created to benefit the
\nBlair E. Batson Hospital for Children at the University of
\nMississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe Greek Council includes presidents of the 32 Greek
\norganizations on the Oxford campus and leaders of the
\nInterfraternity, Panhellenic and National Panhellenic
\ncouncils. Its members decide the amount and beneficiaries
\nof the gifts.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn addition, the UM chapter of Delta Delta Delta sorority
\nhas given $5,000 to the Children’s Cancer Clinic at the
\nBlair E. Batson Children’s Hospital.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are absolutely so excited about this,” said Suzan
\nThames, chair of the board of Friends of the Children’s
\nHospital. “So few people realize that the Blair E. Batson
\nChildren’s Hospital is the only children’s hospital in the
\nstate of Mississippi, treating such diseases as cancer,
\nepilepsy, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia and numerous
\nother childhood illnesses. These are wonderful and generous
\ngifts from the Greek students at the University of
\nMississippi. I can’t tell you how much we appreciate
\neverything they have done for the children of our state.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe funds given by the Tri Deltas were raised at the Delta
\nDelta Delta Pancakes for Kids event last fall. The event
\nyielded more than $16,000, which was divided between state
\nand national nonprofits.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We wanted to do something to benefit our state,” said
\nElizabeth McRight, president of the sorority and a
\nGreenville native. “This is the first time our sorority has
\ngiven to the Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital, but I
\nknow it won’t be the last. This is something our girls are
\nreally proud of.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThomas “Sparky” Reardon, dean of students, commended the
\nstudents for their generosity and desire to positively
\nrepresent the entire UM Greek community.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“These students are scholars and leaders who believe in
\ngiving to others,” Reardon said. “Ole Miss Greeks provide
\nsupport and services for agencies, organizations and
\nindividuals. These gifts to benefit the Blair E. Batson
\nHospital for Children are especially meaningful since the
\nfunds will be used to help the children of Mississippi.
\nThis is an outstanding achievement and we, as a university,
\nappreciate and applaud their efforts and generosity.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe UM Greek community donated more than $300,000 in 2007
\nto local, state and national causes.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
