\nOXFORD, Miss. – The Lafayette-Oxford-University Symphony
\nOrchestra performs its final concert of the season Monday
\n(April 28) in the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the
\nPerforming Arts at the University of Mississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nUnder the direction of Ronald Vernon, the orchestra is
\nslated to perform the music of Hector Berlioz, Paul Creston
\nand Howard Hanson. Vernon is interim associate dean of the
\nCollege of Liberal Arts and professor of music.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nFeatured musician for the concert is graduate student Lamon
\nLawhorn on marimba. Lawhorn is winner of the 2008 student
\nConcerto Competition.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTickets to the 8 p.m. concert are $10 for general admission
\nand $6 for UM students with ID. Tickets can be purchased in
\nadvance at the UM Box Office in the Student Union or by
\ncalling 662-915-7411.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nLawhorn, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, is slated to
\ncomplete his master’s degree in music this semester. He
\nreceived a bachelor’s degree in music from Prairie View A&M
\nUniversity in 2006, where he was named the outstanding
\nupperclassman. At Ole Miss, he has performed with the
\nMississippians Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, L-O-U
\nSymphony, Steel Drum Ensemble and African Drum and Dance
\nEnsemble. He is also a member of the Corinth Symphony.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nLawhorn said he considers the marimba to be the most
\nversatile of all percussion instruments. He began playing
\ndrums in church at age 7 and continued in his high school
\nband.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nRicky Burkhead, who has taught Lawhorn for two years,
\ndescribes him as, “a well-rounded musician who seems to
\nenjoy challenges.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I’ve always been impressed with his scholarship and the
\npassion he has for his work,” said Burkhead, associate
\nprofessor of music.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
