His<br \/>\nresume shows an active mind engaged in many different kinds<br \/>\nof inquiry.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The Summer Poet in Residence Fellowship, inaugurated last<br \/>\nyear, bridges the gap between the Grisham Visiting Writers<br \/>\nSeries of the spring and fall, said Patrick Quinn, chair of<br \/>\nthe Department of English. &#8220;For our students to now have<br \/>\nyear-round access to great literary leaders is an exciting<br \/>\ncultural opportunity.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>While at UM, Hu is to give a public lecture\/reading, make<br \/>\nweekly classroom visits and co-host a writers&#8217; salon for<br \/>\ngraduate students. He also plans to continue working on his<br \/>\npoetry collection &#8220;Greenhouses, Lighthouses.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/><span>&#8220;During the residency, I hope to complete a series of<br \/>\npalinodes, poems that literally sing back or recant<br \/>\nsomething,&#8221; Hu said. &#8220;I&#8217;m trying to write about a moment<br \/>\nthat has gone missing, whether it&#8217;s activism in 1964 or the<br \/>\ndisappearance of bees from U.S. agriculture.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Hu&#8217;s poems have appeared in The New Republic, Ontario<br \/>\nReview and Ploughshares, among other publications. Selected<br \/>\npoems to be included in his third poetry collection<br \/>\nrecently won the 2007 James D. Phelan Literary Award.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>He is the author of &#8220;The Book of Motion&#8221; (University of<br \/>\nGeorgia Press, 2003) and &#8220;Mine&#8221; (Ausable Press, 2007),<br \/>\nwhich won an Eisner Prize. A graduate of Princeton<br \/>\nUniversity and the University of Michigan, he is pursuing a<br \/>\ndoctorate in film studies at the University of<br \/>\nCalifornia-Berkeley. Hu has received fellowships from<br \/>\nMacDowell Colony, Millay Colony and the Virginia Center for<br \/>\nthe Creative Arts.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;He is a fascinating writer,&#8221; said Ann Fisher-Wirth,<br \/>\nprofessor of English. &#8220;I know he will offer a great deal to<br \/>\nour MFA students in poetry, and I am very pleased that he<br \/>\nwill be a part of our community.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Fisher-Wirth said Hu&#8217;s letter regarding his poetic projects<br \/>\nand the poems he submitted with his application evinced &#8220;a<br \/>\ndeep and sophisticated intellectual curiosity.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;This fresh and unexpected poet extends the lyric into the<br \/>\nsocial space without losing any of song&#8217;s intensity or<br \/>\nmystery,&#8221; wrote poet Mark Doty.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Hu listed some of his favorite poets as Mark McMorris and<br \/>\nC.D. Wright. &#8220;I&#8217;m interested in their voice, which turns<br \/>\neveryday speech into a poetry outside of time,&#8221; he said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Hu has worked as a political consultant and computer<br \/>\nscientist. He resides in San Francisco, where he writes on<br \/>\nfilm and new media.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Award-winning poet Paula Bohince was the inaugural Summer<br \/>\nPoet in Residence in 2007.
