OXFORD, Miss. – The roles of the Virgin Mary and Fatima in
\nmedieval Christianity and Shiite Islam, respectively, are
\nexplored in a new book written by a University of
\nMississippi assistant professor of religion.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“Chosen Among Women: Mary and Fatima in Medieval
\nChristianity and Shiite Islam” (University of Notre Dame
\nPress, 2008) is the culmination of several years’ work,
\nsaid Mary F. Thurlkill, whose teaching and research
\ninterests focus on comparisons between the two religions.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n


“Thurlkill has produced a remarkable study, a model for
\ncomparative work in the history of religions,” said Brannon
\nWheeler, visiting distinguished professor of history and
\npolitics at the U.S. Naval Academy. “The book is original,
\nwell researched and shows great erudition. Thurlkill’s
\noriginal acumen is brought to bear on a rich and variegated
\ntopic that has for too long been ignored by specialists not
\nwilling to move beyond the confines of overly determined
\nareas of research.”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe book addresses the proliferation of Marian imagery from
\nlate antiquity through the writings of church fathers and
\npopular hagiography. It also focuses on the importance of
\nFatima in the evolution of Shiite identity throughout the
\nMiddle East. The author examines the way scholar Muhammad
\nBaqir al-Majlisi addresses Fatima as a representation of
\nthe Shiite holy family and compares the significance of
\nfeminine ideals found in Shiite Islam and medieval
\nChristianity and its relevance in the modern world.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I think it offers scholars of Christianity new insight
\ninto the earliest signs of Marian veneration in the West;
\nand, to scholars of Islam in general and Shiism in
\nparticular, it offers a new way of understanding Fatima,
\nthe prophet Muhammad’s daughter,” Thrulkill said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
