\nreturns to his alma mater May 10 to deliver the University
\nof Mississippi’s 155th commencement address.
\n<\/span>

Smith, who anchors the network’s signature “The Fox Report”
\nevening newscast and afternoon news-interview program
\n“Studio B,” speaks to graduating students and their
\nfamilies at 9 a.m. in the Grove. This year’s graduating
\nclass includes some 2,800 candidates for undergraduate and
\ngraduate degrees.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\n“We invite nationally and internationally renowned leaders
\nfor our commencement address, and this year we are honored
\nto bring one of our own back to campus,” Chancellor Robert
\nKhayat said. “Shepard Smith is a rising star in network
\nnews, and he has helped redefine how people get and
\nperceive information about events around the world.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRecipients of doctor of philosophy degrees are to be hooded
\nby their major professors in a 7:30 p.m. ceremony May 9 in
\nthe Ford Center for the Performing Arts.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nA shuttle service for handicapped visitors is to be
\nprovided Saturday before the main ceremony. Shuttles will
\npick up people needing assistance at the Welcome Center on
\nUniversity Avenue (in front of Coulter Hall) and take them
\nto the seating area for the main ceremony. Visitors needing
\nassistance after the ceremony should tell their driver.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nFollowing Smith’s address, individual schools and the
\nCollege of Liberal Arts hold ceremonies at various times
\nand locations to present baccalaureate, master’s, doctor of
\npharmacy and juris doctor degrees and awards. The schedule
\nis as follows:
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

  • School of Applied Sciences – Indoor Practice Facility,

    \nSmith Coliseum, 11 a.m.<\/li>\n
  • School of Engineering –
    \nLyceum Circle, 11 a.m.<\/li>\n
  • School of Education –
    \nGrove, 11 a.m.<\/li>\n
  • School of Law – Grove, 11 a.m.<\/li>\n
  • School of Pharmacy – Turner Center, 11:30 a.m.<\/li>\n
  • College of Liberal Arts – Tad Smith Coliseum, 2
    \np.m.<\/li>\n

    <\/span><\/p>\n

    \nIn case of rain, Education will be moved to 2:30 p.m. in
    \nthe Indoor Practice Facility; Engineering, 11 a.m. in
    \nFulton Chapel; and Law, 1:30 p.m. in the Ford Center.
    \n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

    \nSmith, a native of Holly Springs, studied journalism at Ole
    \nMiss and sharpened his skills at the campus Student Media
    \nCenter. He landed his first job with NBC affiliate WJHG-TV
    \nin Panama City, Fla., then moved to stations in Fort Myers,
    \nOrlando and Miami. He worked as a reporter for the
    \nnow-defunct news show “A Current Affair” and then for the
    \nFox News Edge affiliate news service.
    \n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

    \nHe joined Fox News Channel when it was created in 1996. He
    \nquickly moved up the ranks, covering such events as the
    \nColumbine High School shootings, President Bill Clinton’s
    \nimpeachment trial, the Kosovo war and Princess Diana’s
    \nfuneral.
    \n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

    \nMore recently, he brought his programs to Mississippi for
    \nlive coverage of Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath. In March,
    \nhe broadcast live from the Oxford Square for two days as
    \npart of the network’s coverage of the Mississippi
    \nprimaries.
    \n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

    \nWith Smith as its anchor, “The Fox Report” ranks as one of
    \nthe top five cable news programs and has been No. 1 in the
    \n6 p.m. time slot for more than 60 consecutive months.
    \n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
