OXFORD, Miss. – Former Mississippi Gov. William Winter is
\nto receive a special Profile in Courage Award for Lifetime
\nAchievement May 12 at the John F. Kennedy Presidential
\nLibrary and Museum in Boston.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe honor recognizes Winter’s leadership in championing
\nracial equality and educational opportunity in
\nMississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n


“This is an award that I never expected to receive, but
\nthat I am very honored to accept,” Winter said. “It has
\nspecial meaning for me inasmuch as it bears the name of
\nPresident John Kennedy, whom I greatly admired.”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs governor of Mississippi in the early 1980s, Winter
\ncalled on the Mississippi Legislature to pass a landmark
\neducation reform proposal aimed at raising the quality of
\nand broadening access to public education in the state.
\nWinter’s Education Reform Act of 1982 was nationally
\nacclaimed as one of the most progressive and comprehensive
\npieces of education legislation that had been passed in the
\ncountry at that time.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHe served on President Clinton’s Advisory Board on Race
\n1997-98. The following year, the William Winter Institute
\nfor Racial Reconciliation was established at the University
\nof Mississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Governor Winter’s lifelong commitment to excellence and
\nequity in education and to racial justice and
\nreconciliation has long been the standard of public service
\nin Mississippi,” said Susan Glisson, director of the Winter
\nInstitute at UM. “It is fitting now that the Kennedy
\nLibrary recognizes him as a national leader.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWinter said Kennedy’s book “Profiles in Courage” inspired
\nhim at the time it was written in 1956, particularly
\nbecause it singled out one of Kennedy’s and Winter’s
\nheroes, U.S. Sen. L.Q.C. Lamar of Mississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Lamar was recognized by Kennedy because he became a
\nrespected voice for Southern and Northern reconciliation
\nafter the Civil War. Racial and sectional reconciliation
\nremain a goal for all of us today,” Winter added.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe late president’s daughter, Caroline Kennedy, expressed
\nthe appropriateness of Winter’s selection for the honor.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Governor Winter gives testimony to President Kennedy’s
\nbelief that politics can truly be a noble profession,” said
\nKennedy, president of the JFK Library Foundation. “His
\nlifetime of public service, both to his country and his
\nbeloved state of Mississippi, has been distinguished by its
\ndevotion to equality and justice. We are proud to honor
\nhim.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPast recipients of the Profile in Courage Award include
\nformer President Gerald Ford, U.S. Rep. John Murtha, former
\nNavy General Counsel Alberta Mora, Ukraine President Viktor
\nYushchenko, U.S. senators John McCain and Russell Feingold,
\nAtlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, former governors Roy Barnes
\n(Ga.) and David Beasley (S.C.) and former U.S. Rep. Carl
\nElliott Sr. (Ala.).
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum is a
