OXFORD, Miss. – Each day at the University of
\nMississippi, students are impacted by words and
\nactions of many faculty and staff who know their
\nwork extends beyond classrooms, labs and offices.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n For the 14th year, two UM members who personify
\nsuch extraordinary service have been selected for
\nspecial recognition. Aileen Ajootian, chair and
\nassociate professor of classics and art, and Marc
\nShowalter, director of the University Counseling
\nCenter and assistant professor of education, are
\nrecipients of the 2008 Frist Student Service
\nAwards.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

“Ole Miss is a service-oriented, loving community,”
\nChancellor Robert Khayat said. “To be recognized by
\nstudents, faculty and staff as a leader in service
\naffirms the extraordinary level of commitment of
\nthe Frist recipients.”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n The awards, one for faculty and one for staff, were
\nestablished with a gift from the late Dr. Thomas F.
\nFrist Sr. of Nashville, a 1930 UM graduate.
\nAjootian and Showalter were selected by a
\nchancellor’s committee of faculty, staff and
\nstudents assessing nominations. They each receive
\n$1,000 and a plaque and are to be recognized
\nSaturday (May 10) at the university’s commencement
\nceremony.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Nomination letters for the award cite specific
\nexamples of how members have gone the extra mile
\nfor students. A former student nominating Ajootian
\nwrote about how she encouraged him: “I can remember
\nfeeling hopeless, but Dr. Ajootian gave me hope.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “She created numerous tutoring sessions for her
\nstudents besides the time that she would spend
\nhelping students during her office hours,” he
\ncontinued.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n The same theme of selflessness was reflected in
\nletters of nomination for Showalter. A student
\nwrote: “(Dr. Showalter’s) life has been dedicated
\nto serving others on this campus, often putting his
\npersonal life on hold. His character is such that
\nhe always puts students first.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n A graduate instructors nomination for Showalter
\nread: “As I near the completion of my own graduate
\nwork …, I know that one of the best memories I
\nwill take with me is that of Dr. Marc Showalter and
\nhis tireless and selfless efforts to help students
\nas they pursue their goals in higher education.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Showalter said he was overwhelmed by the honor.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “I’m surprised and touched to be selected, and I am
\nblown away by the kindness and compassion of the
\nmembers of this community,” he said. “While I do
\nfeel unworthy of this, I am thrilled to be listed
\namong those who have been given this award. I can
\nthink of no greater compliment from my colleagues
\nand students.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Ajootian also expressed surprise.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “Receiving this award was a complete shock,” she
\nsaid. “But it is such a great honor. It makes me
\nwant to continue doing what I have been doing. I
\nlove working in an environment what I can continue
\nto learn and share my excitement for learning with
\nmy students.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n A native of Long Island, N.Y., Ajootian joined the
\nUM faculty in 1996. She holds master’s degrees from
\nBryn Mawr College and the University of Oregon. She
\nearned her doctorate in classical archaeology from
\nBryn Mawr. She is a member of the Archaeological
\nInstitute of America and of the College Arts
\nAssociation. Her fieldwork in archaeology includes
\nresearch in Athens and ancient Corinth in Greece.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Showalter, a licensed professional counselor,
\ncompleted his doctorate in education at UM in 1994
\nand was named manager of professional services. He
\nholds a master’s degree from the University of
\nCentral Arkansas and bachelor’s from Harding
\nUniversity. He is Reality Therapy Certified through
\nthe Institute for Reality Therapy.
