\n177 to be awarded juris doctor degrees<\/i><\/span><\/h2>\n

\n\u00a0OXFORD, Miss. – Law student Michael Dodge earns a special
\ndistinction Saturday at the University of Mississippi when
\nhe is awarded the juris doctor degree. Dodge, of Long
\nBeach, becomes the first graduate to also receive a special
\nspace law certificate, the only one of its kind in the
\ncountry.\n<\/p>\n

\nSeven other students are slated to receive certificates in
\ncriminal law, the first to be awarded from the law school.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n


These eight students are among 177 graduates scheduled to
\nbe awarded degrees Saturday (May 10) at the law school’s 11
\na.m. commencement ceremony in the Grove. Robert Bailess,
\npresident of the Mississippi Bar, is the speaker. Bailess
\nearned both his undergraduate and law degrees from Ole Miss
\nand is a partner in the Vicksburg firm Wheeless, Shappley,
\nBailess & Rector LLP.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDodge is to be awarded the space law certificate through
\nthe law school’s National Center for Remote Sensing, Air
\nand Space Law.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“For me the certificate provides both a tremendous sense of
\nachievement, and also a potential enticement for
\nemployers,” Dodge said, adding that no where else could he
\nhave gained such a comprehensive education in space, air
\nand remote sensing law.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The professors and personnel here are the highest quality
\nthat can be found anywhere in the world, and I have learned
\nfrom them the necessary skills I will need to effectively
\npractice space law,” he said. “Ole Miss is, simply put, the
\nspace law expert, and anyone wishing practice in this field
\nshould get their legal education here.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDodge said his interest in space law stems from a
\nfascination with space exploration that began when he was a
\nyoung child, so when he started law school, his interest in
\nspace was based mostly on science and history.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Once I came to the law school, I read that there was an
\nattorney here that specialized in space law,” he said.
\n“After that, I became curious as to why space needed
\nregulation, and how legal regimes could be constructed to
\ngovern such an expanse. After meeting Professor (Joanne)
\nGabrynowicz, my curiosity only grew, and ever since, I have
\nbeen dedicated to researching legal issues associated with
\nhumankind’s utilization of space.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nGabrynowicz, director of the center, said the new
\nconcentration provides Dodge and students to come with a
\ncompetitive edge in the aerospace industry.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Students in this program have unparalleled opportunities
\nto participate in the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court
\ncompetition, the Journal of Space Law, center conferences
\nand events, and internships that strengthen their future
\nemployment options,” she said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nShe explained that the certificate is available by offering
\nthe only dedicated aerospace law curriculum in the nation
\nfrom an American Bar Association-accredited law school.
\nRequirements to earn the certificate include courses on
\nU.S. space and aviation law, international space and
\naviation law, and remote sensing; participation in the
\npublication of the Journal of Space Law; and independent
\nresearch.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Law Dean Samuel M. Davis said, “We are particularly
\nproud to be offering these space law certificates
\nfor the first time, since ours is the only program
\nof its kind in the U.S. and only one of two in
\nNorth America.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Students scheduled to receive inaugural criminal
\nlaw certificates this year are Michael C. Adams of
\nLynchburg, Va.; Angela M. Gallagher of Oxford;
\nWilliam Jeffrey Jernigan of Vicksburg; Lori Lynn
\nKing of Meridian; Daniel B. McLeroy of Center,
\nTexas; Abigail Morrissey of Oxford; and Nicole A.
\nShort of Oxford.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nStudents earning this certification must complete a number
\nof requirements in addition to their general legal studies,
\nincluding 27 credit hours in criminal law and
\nadvocacy-related subjects, as well as clinical and writing
\nassignments. The program is designed to provide students
\nwith broad-based exposure to concepts, topics and skills
\nvital to criminal law, said Hans Sinha, professor and
\ndirector of the program.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDavis said the graduation ceremony marks the end of a
\nrigorous journey for students.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Graduation represents the culmination of three years of
\ndifficult, challenging and – I hope – interesting work,” he
\nsaid. “I marvel each year at how our students have grown
\nand how much they have learned in such a short period of
\ntime. I wish all of them the very best.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nEstablished in 1999, the National Center for Remote
\nSensing, Air and Space Law is a source for research,
\neducation, outreach activities and information exchange
\namong academic, government and commercial organizations
\nrelated to the legal aspects of human activities using
\naerospace technologies.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe National Center for Justice and the Rule of Law offers
\na number of clinical programs for law students and focuses
\non issues related to the criminal justice system with
\nfunding from the Department of Justice.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
