Dodge, of Long<br \/>\nBeach, becomes the first graduate to also receive a special<br \/>\nspace law certificate, the only one of its kind in the<br \/>\ncountry.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Seven other students are slated to receive certificates in<br \/>\ncriminal law, the first to be awarded from the law school.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/><span>These eight students are among 177 graduates scheduled to<br \/>\nbe awarded degrees Saturday (May 10) at the law school&#8217;s 11<br \/>\na.m. commencement ceremony in the Grove. Robert Bailess,<br \/>\npresident of the Mississippi Bar, is the speaker. Bailess<br \/>\nearned both his undergraduate and law degrees from Ole Miss<br \/>\nand is a partner in the Vicksburg firm Wheeless, Shappley,<br \/>\nBailess &#038; Rector LLP.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Dodge is to be awarded the space law certificate through<br \/>\nthe law school&#8217;s National Center for Remote Sensing, Air<br \/>\nand Space Law.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;For me the certificate provides both a tremendous sense of<br \/>\nachievement, and also a potential enticement for<br \/>\nemployers,&#8221; Dodge said, adding that no where else could he<br \/>\nhave gained such a comprehensive education in space, air<br \/>\nand remote sensing law.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;The professors and personnel here are the highest quality<br \/>\nthat can be found anywhere in the world, and I have learned<br \/>\nfrom them the necessary skills I will need to effectively<br \/>\npractice space law,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Ole Miss is, simply put, the<br \/>\nspace law expert, and anyone wishing practice in this field<br \/>\nshould get their legal education here.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Dodge said his interest in space law stems from a<br \/>\nfascination with space exploration that began when he was a<br \/>\nyoung child, so when he started law school, his interest in<br \/>\nspace was based mostly on science and history.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Once I came to the law school, I read that there was an<br \/>\nattorney here that specialized in space law,&#8221; he said.<br \/>\n&#8220;After that, I became curious as to why space needed<br \/>\nregulation, and how legal regimes could be constructed to<br \/>\ngovern such an expanse. After meeting Professor (Joanne)<br \/>\nGabrynowicz, my curiosity only grew, and ever since, I have<br \/>\nbeen dedicated to researching legal issues associated with<br \/>\nhumankind&#8217;s utilization of space.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Gabrynowicz, director of the center, said the new<br \/>\nconcentration provides Dodge and students to come with a<br \/>\ncompetitive edge in the aerospace industry.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Students in this program have unparalleled opportunities<br \/>\nto participate in the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court<br \/>\ncompetition, the Journal of Space Law, center conferences<br \/>\nand events, and internships that strengthen their future<br \/>\nemployment options,&#8221; she said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>She explained that the certificate is available by offering<br \/>\nthe only dedicated aerospace law curriculum in the nation<br \/>\nfrom an American Bar Association-accredited law school.<br \/>\nRequirements to earn the certificate include courses on<br \/>\nU.S. space and aviation law, international space and<br \/>\naviation law, and remote sensing; participation in the<br \/>\npublication of the Journal of Space Law; and independent<br \/>\nresearch.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span> Law Dean Samuel M. Davis said, &#8220;We are particularly<br \/>\nproud to be offering these space law certificates<br \/>\nfor the first time, since ours is the only program<br \/>\nof its kind in the U.S. and only one of two in<br \/>\nNorth America.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span> Students scheduled to receive inaugural criminal<br \/>\nlaw certificates this year are Michael C. Adams of<br \/>\nLynchburg, Va.; Angela M. Gallagher of Oxford;<br \/>\nWilliam Jeffrey Jernigan of Vicksburg; Lori Lynn<br \/>\nKing of Meridian; Daniel B. McLeroy of Center,<br \/>\nTexas; Abigail Morrissey of Oxford; and Nicole A.<br \/>\nShort of Oxford.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Students earning this certification must complete a number<br \/>\nof requirements in addition to their general legal studies,<br \/>\nincluding 27 credit hours in criminal law and<br \/>\nadvocacy-related subjects, as well as clinical and writing<br \/>\nassignments. The program is designed to provide students<br \/>\nwith broad-based exposure to concepts, topics and skills<br \/>\nvital to criminal law, said Hans Sinha, professor and<br \/>\ndirector of the program.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Davis said the graduation ceremony marks the end of a<br \/>\nrigorous journey for students.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Graduation represents the culmination of three years of<br \/>\ndifficult, challenging and &#8211; I hope &#8211; interesting work,&#8221; he<br \/>\nsaid. &#8220;I marvel each year at how our students have grown<br \/>\nand how much they have learned in such a short period of<br \/>\ntime.
