OXFORD, Miss. – Seven University of Mississippi journalism
\nstudents and their instructor, all members of the local
\nPublic Relations Association of Mississippi chapter, won
\ndistinguished awards including two of the top four honors
\n– at the recent statewide PRAM conference in Hattiesburg.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe students competed with professionals to win
\ncertificates of achievement, awards of excellence and first
\nplace PRism awards, as well as prestigious Best in Show and
\nJudge’s Choice honors.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I was overwhelmed with pride at our students’ success in
\nthe competition,”said Robin Street, instructor in
\njournalism and public relations. “Every student who entered
\nwon an award. That says a tremendous amount about the
\nquality of these students and their work.”<\/span>\n<\/p>\n


Street won two PRism awards and one of two Judges’ Choice
\nprizes. She said local PRAM members, including one Oxford
\nprofessional, competed against some 250 entries in 30
\ndifferent categories, and took home a “record number of
\nwins, especially among our students.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“All of us in PRAM were particularly impressed with the Ole
\nMiss students’ multiple awards,” said Jarrod Ravencraft,
\nstate president of PRAM. “They were in a professional
\ncompetition and more than held their own with the
\nprofessionals. Everyone in the room was aware that night at
\nhow many times an Ole Miss student’s name was called.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSally Summerson, a senior journalism and public relations
\nmajor from Richmond, Va., won the first-ever Student Best
\nin Show award for the “Eating Locally”campaign she
\ndeveloped during an internship with the Southern Foodways
\nAlliance, housed at UM. She said the campaign was “designed
\nto show the public that the extra energy involved in buying
\nlocal produce is worth the time, money and effort.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Sally did so well that the judges actually created an
\naward for her,”Street said. “They’ve always given a Best in
\nShow award, but this year, they created a Student Best in
\nShow just for her entry.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSummerson also won a PRism for the campaign and an award of
\nexcellence for a feature story.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I was really honored and excited to receive these
\nawards,”Summerson said. “Robin Street is an excellent
\nteacher. We would not have won these without her help,
\nguidance and faith in her students’ abilities.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOther student winners include senior journalism major Megan
\nDaniel of Columbus, who received an award of excellence;
\nWill Mestayer, a senior journalism major from Bay St.
\nLouis, who won an award of excellence; senior journalism
\nmajor Lori Simpson, of Byhalia, who won an award of
\nexcellence and a $1,000 PRAM scholarship; Rachael Shook, a
\nsenior journalism major from Cordova, Tenn., who won a
\nPRism; journalism graduate student Raymond Wade, of Moss
\nPoint, who won a certificate of achievement; and Julie
\nWard, senior journalism major of Bristol Va., winner of a
\nPRism award.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPam Swain, vice president of the Oxford-Lafayette County
\nChamber of Commerce, took home an Award of Excellence for
\nPublications, for External Magazine.
