OXFORD, Miss. – Now more than ever, it is extremely
\nimportant for college students to be aware of global
\nissues, and a University of Mississippi student from Amory
\nhas received a scholarship that will help him do just
\nthat.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nJohn Sullivan, a 20-year-old rising junior, is recipient of
\na new scholarship funded by UM’s Japan Student Service
\nOrganization. In September, he embarks on a 10-month tour
\nhalfway around the world to Osaka, Japan. Majoring in
\nbiology and minoring in Japanese in the College of Liberal
\nArts, Sullivan plans to immerse himself in the country’s
\nculture and live among its people.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n


“I really want to increase my Japanese-speaking skills,”
\nSullivan said. “I also hope to increase my knowledge of
\nother cultures, while gaining a more global-oriented way of
\nthinking.”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWith a population of less than 8,000, small-town Amory has
\nlittle in common with Osaka, which boasts more than 2.6
\nmillion people. Sullivan expects the trek to be a
\nlife-changing opportunity. (And that’s not to mention his
\nhaving to substitute Japanese dishes such as octopus
\ndumplings for traditional Southern fare like fried
\ncatfish.)
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Amory is a great town to grow up in, but it isn’t a very
\ndiverse place,” Sullivan said. “The most prominent thing
\nthat stands out in my mind is the fact that no matter where
\nI go in Amory, there’s always someone familiar.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThat familiarity is sure to vanish upon Sullivan’s arrival
\nin Osaka. The $10,000 JASSO scholarship enables him to
\nstudy at Osaka Gakuin University, taking courses in
\nJapanese language, culture, social sciences, political
\nscience and business.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Students get an intensive Japanese language program while
\nthey’re there, and that’s why they don’t necessarily have
\nto have any prior knowledge of Japanese language to qualify
\nfor this program,” said Blair McElroy, UM study abroad
\nadviser for Asian programs.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe academic year is broken into the fall semester, a
\nseven-week interim program and the spring semester.
\nStudents take 16 credits per week, with 10 credits of
\nJapanese language and six credits of subject-based courses
\ntaught in English for the fall semester. The interim
\nprogram is an intensive language program, and all classes
\nin the spring semester are taught in Japanese, McElroy
\nsaid.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I’ve only left the country once, to Mexico,” Sullivan
\nsaid. “It was a vacation cruise during my senior year of
\nhigh school. I didn’t have a large amount of time to
\ninteract with the locals; however, I can say that it made
\nme realize how radically different a country can be, even
\nthough it is only a short distance away.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOGU is a private institution in the heart of Osaka, Japan’s
\nsecond-largest city and the country’s commercial center,
\nwith Mitsubishi, Sanyo and Suntory calling it home. The
\nschool is also UM’s only exchange partner in Japan offering
\na home-stay option, providing students with complete
\nimmersion in Japanese culture.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWith Toyota preparing to open a manufacturing facility in
\nTupelo and Nissan already in production near Jackson, the
\ngrowing relationship between this state and Japan offers a
\nperfect time for Mississippi students to study there, said
\nUM Study Abroad director Susan Oliphant.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Imagine the impact of such study on future employment,”
\nOliphant said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSullivan expects to graduate from UM in May 2010, then
\napply to law school. He hopes to eventually work with Asian
\ncountries in environmental law.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
