OXFORD, Miss. – Anthony J. Verlangieri has been named interim chair of
\nthe Department of Pharmacology at the University of Mississippi School
\nof Pharmacy.<\/p>\n

“We are very fortunate to have Dr. Verlangieri’s
\nfocused leadership and vision at this critical juncture,” Dean Barbara
\nG. Wells said. “He is an accomplished scholar, and his commitment to
\nexcellence in teaching is well-known throughout the campus and beyond.
\nThe faculty of the Department of Pharmacology are extremely capable,
\nand working with Dr. Verlangieri, they will continue to excel in all
\ntheir missions.”

A faculty member for more than 27 years, Verlangieri earned his doctorate in biochemistry\/physiology from Pennsylvania State University and his bachelor’s in biochemistry from Rutgers University. He came to UM in 1980 from Rutgers, where he was an assistant professor of environmental toxicology.<\/p>\n

He received the pharmacy school’s Teacher of the Year Award for teaching pathophysiology to the first professional-year class in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. His research involves the study of antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, and their effects on cardiovascular disease, heart disease and coronary artery disease. For his work in this area, Verlangieri received the 1990 Hermes Vitamin Research Prize from Hermes GMBH Pharmaceuticals in Munich, Germany.<\/p>\n

He has represented the pharmacy school on several UM committees, including the Promotion and Tenure Review Committee and Faculty Senate.<\/p>\n

“I am excited in confronting the challenge of guiding the department through a tough transition period and to the future,” Verlangieri said.<\/p>\n
