\nOXFORD, Miss. – Teachers, administrators, counselors and
\ncoordinators from across the region are to gather at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi in July to gain insight and
\ndirection on implementing and conducting successful
\nAdvanced Placement programs in their school districts.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe third annual UM Advanced Placement Summer Institute
\nincludes two sessions for teachers and a new session for
\nadministrators.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nSession One for teachers runs July 7-11 and features Pre-AP
\nVertical Team English, Pre-AP Vertical Team Mathematics,
\nPre-AP Vertical Team Science, Pre-AP Vertical Team Social
\nStudies, Spanish Language, and U.S. Government and
\nPolitics.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSession Two for teachers runs July 21-25 and features
\nCalculus AB, U.S. History, English Literature\/Composition
\nand English Language\/Composition.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe APSI provides teachers with an overview of the
\ncurriculum structure and content of specific AP courses.
\nTeachers not only focus on developing AP curriculum for
\ntheir own schools, but they also hone their teaching
\nskills. Particular attention is to be given to the
\nrelationship of the APSI workshop to the AP exam.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSession Three is a new session for administrators,
\ncounselors and coordinators. Slated for July 28-30, this
\nsession, taught by College Board staff and consultants,
\nprovides attendees with the knowledge to develop, manage,
\ncoach and coordinate successful Advanced Placement
\nprograms. The institute is designed for those with all
\nlevels of experience.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are eager to bring educators and administrators to the
\nAPSI at Ole Miss,” said Mary Leach, AP Summer Institute
\ncoordinator in the Division of Outreach and Continuing
\nEducation. “We not only want to create a beneficial
\nlearning environment for them, but we also hope to have a
\nhand in the enhancement of student high school
\ncurriculums,” Leach said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nFees for each session include a $50 non-refundable deposit,
\nas well as $550 tuition per person (add $25 for Pre-AP VT
\nScience). Discounts are available to vertical teams of four
\nor more teachers from the same school district. The tuition
\nfee includes the cost of instruction, packet and all
\ntraining supplies, four lunches, one special dinner, breaks
\nand breakfast refreshments. Tuition does not include
\nhousing, but teachers are encouraged to stay at the Inn at
\nOle Miss. Most workshops reach capacity enrollment early.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBoth new and experienced teachers are encouraged to attend
\nthe workshops to gain knowledge of course content and learn
\nteaching skills and classroom strategies necessary to
\nprepare students for the AP exam and college success.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“These teachers will learn how to teach the analytical
\nskills that are necessary for college level work,” said
\nLynne Murchison, director of credit programs for the
\nDivision of Outreach and Continuing Education. Murchison
\nhas 25 years experience teaching AP English literature and
\ncomposition, and she prepared the equivalent online class
\nfor the university’s Independent Study High School.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“AP teachers are trying to raise the level of student
\nthinking,” she said. “They are teaching students how to
\nproblem solve, and how to analyze, synthesize and evaluate
\ninformation.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe new session for administrators, counselors and
\ncoordinators is also expected to be well received.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We had an overwhelming number of requests from teachers
\nattending last year’s APSI for training session for their
\nprincipals and counselors,” Leach said. “We felt that there
\nwas a genuine need to bring the staff from the College
\nBoard to assist in training administrators, counselors and
\ncoordinators. This session has been offered for the past
\ntwo years in Alabama at Auburn and at the University of
\nAlabama, but to my knowledge, this is the first year this
\ntype of training is being offered through a summer
\ninstitute in Mississippi.”
