{"id":688,"date":"2008-05-21T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2008-05-21T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/?p=688"},"modified":"2014-09-23T09:24:31","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T14:24:31","slug":"ap-sessions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/ap-sessions\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Advanced Placement Sessions for Teachers, One for Administrators, Counselors Set for July"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<span>OXFORD, Miss. &#8211; Teachers, administrators, counselors and<br \/>\ncoordinators from across the region are to gather at the<br \/>\nUniversity of Mississippi in July to gain insight and<br \/>\ndirection on implementing and conducting successful<br \/>\nAdvanced Placement programs in their school districts.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The third annual UM Advanced Placement Summer Institute<br \/>\nincludes two sessions for teachers and a new session for<br \/>\nadministrators.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Session One for teachers runs July 7-11 and features Pre-AP<br \/>\nVertical Team English, Pre-AP Vertical Team Mathematics,<br \/>\nPre-AP Vertical Team Science, Pre-AP Vertical Team Social<br \/>\nStudies, Spanish Language, and U.S. Government and<br \/>\nPolitics.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Session Two for teachers runs July 21-25 and features<br \/>\nCalculus AB, U.S. History, English Literature\/Composition<br \/>\nand English Language\/Composition.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The APSI provides teachers with an overview of the<br \/>\ncurriculum structure and content of specific AP courses.<br \/>\nTeachers not only focus on developing AP curriculum for<br \/>\ntheir own schools, but they also hone their teaching<br \/>\nskills. Particular attention is to be given to the<br \/>\nrelationship of the APSI workshop to the AP exam.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Session Three is a new session for administrators,<br \/>\ncounselors and coordinators. Slated for July 28-30, this<br \/>\nsession, taught by College Board staff and consultants,<br \/>\nprovides attendees with the knowledge to develop, manage,<br \/>\ncoach and coordinate successful Advanced Placement<br \/>\nprograms. The institute is designed for those with all<br \/>\nlevels of experience.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;We are eager to bring educators and administrators to the<br \/>\nAPSI at Ole Miss,&#8221; said Mary Leach, AP Summer Institute<br \/>\ncoordinator in the Division of Outreach and Continuing<br \/>\nEducation. &#8220;We not only want to create a beneficial<br \/>\nlearning environment for them, but we also hope to have a<br \/>\nhand in the enhancement of student high school<br \/>\ncurriculums,&#8221; Leach said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Fees for each session include a $50 non-refundable deposit,<br \/>\nas well as $550 tuition per person (add $25 for Pre-AP VT<br \/>\nScience). Discounts are available to vertical teams of four<br \/>\nor more teachers from the same school district. The tuition<br \/>\nfee includes the cost of instruction, packet and all<br \/>\ntraining supplies, four lunches, one special dinner, breaks<br \/>\nand breakfast refreshments. Tuition does not include<br \/>\nhousing, but teachers are encouraged to stay at the Inn at<br \/>\nOle Miss. Most workshops reach capacity enrollment early.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>For more information, contact Mary Leach at 662-915-7847 or<br \/>\nmleach@olemiss.edu or go to<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/www.outreach.olemiss.edu\/ProfDev\/teacher\/apinstitute.html.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Both new and experienced teachers are encouraged to attend<br \/>\nthe workshops to gain knowledge of course content and learn<br \/>\nteaching skills and classroom strategies necessary to<br \/>\nprepare students for the AP exam and college success.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;These teachers will learn how to teach the analytical<br \/>\nskills that are necessary for college level work,&#8221; said<br \/>\nLynne Murchison, director of credit programs for the<br \/>\nDivision of Outreach and Continuing Education. Murchison<br \/>\nhas 25 years experience teaching AP English literature and<br \/>\ncomposition, and she prepared the equivalent online class<br \/>\nfor the university&#8217;s Independent Study High School.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;AP teachers are trying to raise the level of student<br \/>\nthinking,&#8221; she said. &#8220;They are teaching students how to<br \/>\nproblem solve, and how to analyze, synthesize and evaluate<br \/>\ninformation.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The new session for administrators, counselors and<br \/>\ncoordinators is also expected to be well received.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;We had an overwhelming number of requests from teachers<br \/>\nattending last year&#8217;s APSI for training session for their<br \/>\nprincipals and counselors,&#8221; Leach said. &#8220;We felt that there<br \/>\nwas a genuine need to bring the staff from the College<br \/>\nBoard to assist in training administrators, counselors and<br \/>\ncoordinators.
