\nOXFORD, Miss. – Big Four accounting firm KPMG LLP has
\nestablished the KPMG Professorship in Accountancy at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn 2002, several KPMG partners established a lectureship in
\naccountancy, a position that requires a $250,000
\ncommitment. Now KPMG partners and other employees have
\ncommitted to growing the fund to more than $500,000 to fund
\na full professorship.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\n“We understand the goals and objectives of the Patterson
\nSchool of Accountancy, and we’re happy to step it up and
\ncontinue our support,” said Matt Lusco, managing partner in
\nthe Memphis, Tenn., and Birmingham, Ala., KPMG offices and
\na UM alumnus. “We benefit a lot from the outstanding talent
\nthat’s available to us, and we hire a number of Ole Miss
\ngraduates in many of our offices around the country. We’re
\nproud of our partnership with the Patterson School and hope
\nto keep growing this position until it reaches the endowed
\nchair level.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBesides financial support, KPMG has granted the Patterson
\nSchool “premier” status. This KPMG designation is given to
\nonly 40 schools nationwide for placing high-achieving
\nstudents in KPMG Internationals member firm offices.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are especially grateful to KPMG for this generous gift
\nto the Patterson School of Accountancy,” said Wendell
\nWeakley, president of the UM Foundation. “KPMG is a
\nlongtime supporter of the Patterson School, and many of our
\ngraduates go on to rewarding careers with the firm.
\nClearly, KPMG is committed to helping provide our students
\nwith the best accounting education possible.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe current holder of the KPMG Professorship is Mark
\nWilder, who also serves as interim dean of the Patterson
\nSchool.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nProfessorships, endowed chairs and other esteemed positions
\nare usually held by faculty members whose accomplishments
\nindicate national and international leadership in their
\nfield. Typically, the faculty member’s efforts are focused
\non enhancing teaching skills and establishing superior
\nrecords of research or other scholarly activity.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I am honored to hold the KPMG Professorship,” Wilder said.
\n“Our undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs are all
\nranked among the top 30 in the nation, and KPMG’s support
\nwill enable us to continue our tremendous success. We have
\na great partnership with KPMG. We are especially grateful
\nto our alumni with the firm, not only for their financial
\nsupport but also for hiring our students and enabling us to
\nachieve ‘premier’ school status.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWilder, who has taught at UM since 1993, is a certified
\npublic accountant whose primary teaching has been in
\nfinancial accounting. He has conducted research in a
\nvariety of areas, including earnings forecasting, financial
\nreporting and issues facing the profession.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWilder is actively involved in university and professional
\nservice, including a term as president of the Northeast
\nChapter of the Mississippi Society of CPAs. He recently
\ncompleted a two-year term on the MSCPA Board of Governors.
\nIn 2005, he received the campuswide Elsie M. Hood
\nOutstanding Teacher Award, the highest teaching honor for
\nUM faculty.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nKPMG LLP’s gift is part of the university’s MomentUM
\ncampaign, a four-year initiative to raise $200 million. The
\ncampaign, which ends in December 2008, already has raised
\nmore than $180 million for scholarships, graduate
\nfellowships, faculty support, a basketball practice
\nfacility, residential colleges and a new law school on the
\nOxford campus. Also in the plans is a cancer center at the
\nUM Medical Center in Jackson.
