OXFORD, Miss. – Two students in the Croft Institute for
\nInternational Studies at the University of Mississippi have
\nreceived competitive fellowships from the Institute of
\nInternational Public Policy.<\/span>
\n
<\/p>\n

\nKyra McDonald of Madison and Deeaneaus Polk of Pascagoula,
\nboth rising juniors, are among 30 students chosen
\nnationally as IIPP Fellows. They are to attend seminars on
\ninternational policy for seven weeks this summer at Spelman
\nCollege in Atlanta, where the institute is based. They also
\nplan to attend seminars on international policy and visit
\nNew York and Washington, D.C.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIIPP is a 14-year-old organization funded by the U.S.
\nDepartment of Education to “increase the representation of
\nminorities in international affairs and global public
\npolicy in the government, private and non-profit sectors,”
\naccording to its Web site, http\/\/:www.uncfsp.org. It is
\nadministered by the United Negro College Fund Special
\nPrograms organization. Students apply as sophomores and
\nreceive specialized training in economics and international
\npolitics to break into the field of international affairs.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPolk said he feels the fellowship will help him land a spot
\nin a top graduate school or law school after graduating
\nfrom UM.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The places they can get you into after undergrad is worth
\nit alone,” he said. “It prepares you to go off and enter
\ninto an Ivy League education.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMcDonald also has plans to use the program to excel in both
\nhigher education and international policy.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Generally in five years, I see myself on the last leg of
\nmy master’s degree and beginning a career with the U.S.
\ngovernment in the area of international affairs and Latin
\nAmerican studies,” she said. “I am nervous because I will
\nbe embarking on a new journey in my life, but that’s what
\nmakes it exciting.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBoth students said they were impressed with the Croft
\nInstitute, describing their professors as “incredibly
\ndedicated” and supportive.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“What makes these kids such compelling candidates is that
\nthey are a little different than your typical Croft
\nstudent,” said Kees Gispen, executive director of the Croft
\nInstitute. While most students in the Croft program come in
\nas freshmen, both McDonald and Polk entered the program
\nafter already starting college.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“(McDonald) is such an excellent student. I taught her in
\nInternational Studies 101 and 20, and she did so well, I
\nwrote her a letter of recommendation for the program.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHe also noted that Polk, a transfer student from
\nMississippi Gulf Coast Community College, is an impressive
\ncandidate, too.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We (Croft) are honored to have him and extremely pleased,”
\nhe said. “I think what we can do for him is help him become
\nready to go on to complete an impressive graduate program.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Croft Institute has been home to four other Ole Miss
\nstudents who have won IIPP Fellowships in the past, said
\nMichael Metcalf, associate provost for international
\naffairs. When the university nominates students for these
\nawards, the Office of the Provost agrees to partially fund
\nthe recipients’ travel abroad during their junior year of
\nstudy, Metcalf said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nNext year, Polk plans to study in Germany for the second
\ntime, and McDonald is to study in Ecuador, her second trip
\nto South America.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
