OXFORD, Miss. – Forty-six years ago Robert F. Kennedy gave
\nthe order for federal troops to facilitate integration at
\nthe University of Mississippi. Appropriately, the progress
\nof race relations at the institution is being examined next
\nweek, as CNN remembers the 40th anniversary of the former
\nU.S. attorney general’s assassination.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nA camera crew visiting the Oxford campus Tuesday and
\nWednesday (May 27-28) conducted interviews with several UM
\nstaff and students and filmed archival photos from the J.D.
\nWilliams Library to be featured in a segment of the cable
\nnews network’s “Black in America” series. The program is
\nscheduled to air between noon and 3 p.m. June 5, a day
\nbefore the anniversary of Kennedy’s assassination.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Segregation represented a big stumbling block for Robert
\nKennedy in 1962,” said Rusty Dornin, CNN correspondent.
\n“Obviously his role as attorney general at that time had a
\nvery powerful impact upon integration in the South and at
\nthe University of Mississippi in particular. What we wanted
\nto see is how far race relations have progressed here since
\nthen.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nIntrigued by Kennedy’s role as attorney general during
\n1960’s desegregation of the university, CNN Senior Editor
\nDavid Schecter conducted an Internet search and found the
\nWeb page for the William Winter Institute for Racial
\nReconciliation. Impressed by the institute’s work and
\nespecially its use of multiracial groups of students, he
\nrecommended it for inclusion in the story.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nDornin interviewed Susan Glisson, director of the Winter
\nInstitute, who acknowledged both Kennedy’s pivotal role and
\nsubsequent increase in the number of African American
\nstudents at UM as clear victories in race relations.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Attorney general Robert Kennedy’s use of federal military
\nintervention made the university live up to its promises of
\ndemocracy,” Glisson said. “Since then, the university has
\nlearned that it does not need the federal government in
\norder to make decisions to do the right thing.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nBeyond the integration of classrooms and dormitories,
\nGlisson cited student-initiated interracial gatherings and
\nactivities, such as the One Mississippi Retreat held in
\nFebruary in Louisville. There, nearly 80 student leaders
\nmet to discuss the campus’ social polarization and
\norganizing strategies to promote more opportunities for
\ncross-cultural interaction.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nDornin also is scheduled to interview Donald Cole,
\nassistant provost and assistant to the vice chancellor for
\nmulticultural affairs, and student interns Melissa Cole of
\nJackson and Jake McGraw of Oxford.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Integration of the University of Mississippi was called
\n‘the last battle of the Civil War,'” Glisson said. “In the
\nnearly 50 years since then, the institution has made a huge
\neffort to rid itself of the vestiges of its confederate
\npast. Still, there are ironies between the past we
\ninherited and the progress we’ve made and continue to
\nmake.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nSince its founding in 1999, the institute has operated on
\nprivate funds, working in some 22 communities to promote
\nbetter communication and understanding among people of all
\nraces, while spurring community development throughout the
\nstate. Its reputable work throughout Mississippi has
\nattracted the interest of community leaders around the
\nregion who seek guidance from Glisson and her staff in
\ninitiating their own projects which aspire to bring
\ntogether residents for the purpose of civic renewal.
