OXFORD, Miss. – Four faculty members in the University of
\nMississippi School of Pharmacy have been recognized through
\nthe Distinguished Teaching Scholars Program, which rewards
\nfaculty for teaching excellence and dedication to student
\nachievement.<\/span>
\n
<\/p>\n

\nJohn P. Bentley, associate professor of pharmacy
\nadministration, and Alicia S. Bouldin, associate professor
\nof pharmacy administration and research associate professor
\nfor instructional assessment and advancement, have been
\nnamed Thelma H. Cerniglia Distinguished Teaching Scholars.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nChristopher R. McCurdy, associate professor of medicinal
\nchemistry and pharmacology, is the Dean’s Advisory
\nCommittee Distinguished Teaching Scholar, and John M.
\nRimoldi, associate professor of medicinal chemistry, is the
\ninaugural Galen Order Distinguished Teaching Scholar.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAll of the awards include an annual stipend for three
\nyears.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Teaching is a very high priority within the School of
\nPharmacy,” Dean Barbara G. Wells said. “The recipients of
\nthis recognition are not only excellent teachers, but they
\ncare passionately about student learning and student
\nwelfare. They serve as a source of expertise, guidance and
\ninspiration to other faculty who wish to improve in this
\narea.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe program was established in 2005 and is funded through
\ngifts from the estate of Thelma H. Cerniglia and members of
\nthe Dean’s Advisory Committee and Galen Order.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nFull-time faculty members with more than four years of
\nservice at UM are eligible and must be nominated for the
\nawards. A committee evaluates nominees and makes a
\nrecommendation to the dean.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“These four teaching scholars exemplify the overall quality
\nof our faculty,” said Marvin C. Wilson, associate dean for
\nacademic and student affairs. “The faculty are dedicated to
\ncontinuously improving their skills and abilities related
\nto their activities in the classroom, laboratory or at a
\npatient’s bedside. This quest for continuous improvement is
\na hallmark of the school and has resulted in its continuous
\nnational recognition as one of the premier pharmacy
\nschools.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBentley was on sabbatical in 2007-08 while enrolled in a
\ngraduate program in biostatistics at the University of
\nAlabama at Birmingham. His teaching in the professional
\npharmacy curriculum focuses on the organization, delivery,
\nfinancing and outcomes of health care, and he teaches
\napplied statistics courses at the graduate level. His
\nresearch focuses on understanding how medications and the
\nmedication consumption experience affect quality of life.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBouldin is involved in the facilitation of assessment
\nactivities at both the programmatic and classroom levels,
\nas well as faculty and teaching assistant development
\nactivities, including the promotion of the use of
\ninstructional technology within the School of Pharmacy. Her
\nclassroom efforts include directing the Professional
\nCommunications in Pharmacy course and participating as a
\nguest lecturer in other courses.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThis is the second time that Bentley and Bouldin have been
\nnamed Thelma H. Cerniglia Distinguished Teaching Scholars.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMcCurdy was named Teacher of the Year by the school’s first
\nprofessional-year class in 2003 and 2006, and he received
\nthe 2007 School of Pharmacy Faculty Research Award. He was
\nnamed an American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy
\nAcademic Leadership Fellow in 2005. McCurdy has nine
\ngraduate students and three post-doctoral fellows in his
\nlaboratory, and he conducts research focused on new
\ntreatments for drug addiction, analgesics and novel
\nantibiotic therapies. This is his second time to receive
\nthe Dean’s Advisory Committee Distinguished Teaching
\nScholar award.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nRimoldi teaches pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics to
\nthird-year students. His research focuses on bioactive
\namines, in-vitro drug metabolism and small-molecule enzyme
\nprobes, and he is authoring a medicinal chemistry textbook
\nfor a major publisher. Awards during his 12 years in
\npharmacy education include the university’s Faculty
\nAchievement Award and the pharmacy school’s Faculty Service
\nAward.
